Following within the footsteps of the Surface Go line is the Surface Laptop Go, a Windows pocket book that targets the price range to mid-range section. While Surface gadgets just like the Surface Pro line have historically been tremendous high-end laptops and tablets aimed toward offering the very best Windows 10 expertise, this newer try is designed particularly for college kids and on a regular basis customers who may not have the price range to splurge on a high-priced machine.
It’s a profitable one at that. At the entry-level, the Surface Laptop Go will get you an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, alongside a beautiful show and glorious construct high quality, for a low asking worth. And, it’s much better than another laptop computer you are going to discover at this worth vary.
Even at its kitted-out configuration, it stays unbelievably inexpensive. The absolute top-end model, which we examined right here, retails at $899 (£899, AU$1,549). We’d contemplate a discount for the specs listed on the appropriate, particularly since most different laptops on this dimension class and worth vary are going to be Chromebooks, that are far more restrictive in what you are able to do than the Laptop Go’s Windows 10 in S Mode. Bonus? You can simply change out of that Mode lately, and the {hardware} on supply is greater than able to being a totally functioning Windows 10 laptop.
The Laptop Go, sadly, may not be getting an replace this 12 months as Microsoft’s Sept 22 occasion got here and went with out a point out of it. However, this 2020 launch remains to be greater than succesful and stays a terrific possibility for college kids and informal customers. Even in 2021, it’s nonetheless a terrific alternative, particularly for those who're snug storing most of your extraneous recordsdata in OneDrive.

The Surface Laptop Go is accessible now, beginning at $549 (£549, AU$999). That entry-level configuration will get you an Intel Core i5-1065G1, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage. This will probably be good for tremendous light-weight work, however most individuals ought to in all probability go for the center tier, which bumps the RAM as much as 8GB and the storage as much as a fully-fledged 128GB SSD for $699 (£699, AU$1,249).
If you wish to max out the machine, you possibly can bump the storage to 256GB to match the configuration we have now for review, and that may set you again $899 (£899, AU$1,549). We would not suggest going for this model, nevertheless. An additional $200 for 128GB of SSD house is simply foolish, and is a large rip-off. You're higher off shopping for an exterior SSD at that time, belief us.
The solely Windows laptop computer that even comes near that is the HP Envy x360 13, which you may get for $799 (£799, AU$1,799) for a configuration that's remarkably near the highest-end Surface Laptop Go. However, it is $100/£100/AU$200 cheaper with the identical quantity of SSD storage, in order that could be the higher purchase for those who want that additional 128GB of house. Though, with OneDrive and providers like Google Drive, we suspect many individuals utilizing this sort of machine do not want an absolute ton of cupboard space.
Design
The Surface Laptop Go is likely one of the loveliest little laptops we have now ever used right here at SociallyTrend. It's extremely skinny and lightweight – measuring simply 0.62 inches thick and a couple of.45 lb, respectively. This is certainly a laptop computer that is an absolute dream to hold round whilst you're commuting or touring between courses - as soon as that is a factor you possibly can commonly do once more, at the least.

It's additionally extremely stable for the value. Though the underside of the laptop computer is plastic, the keyboard deck and show are an extremely stable aluminum, which leads to a premium-feeling machine.
Even the show is extremely stable. This is the sort of construct high quality we anticipate out of laptops that price twice as a lot. No flimsy plastic laptop computer chassis right here, and the Surface Laptop Go is one thing you may get away with tossing in your bag with out worrying about it breaking.
There are additionally no compromises with regards to type. The Surface Laptop Go we acquired for review has a beautiful Ice Blue end. It additionally is available in a Sandstone end, together with the basic Platinum shade possibility that just about each different Surface machine comes with.
The closest comparability we will consider right here is the 12-inch MacBook that Apple has unceremoniously ignored for the previous couple of years. The construct high quality and beauty are right here, at a less expensive worth, as well. Apple's super-ultra-portable machine may need the Surface Laptop Go beat on thinness, but it surely's far more restrictive on what you possibly can really plug into it.
Rather than being caught with one USB-C port just like the Apple MacBook, the Surface Go is rocking Microsoft's Surface Connect port for charging and enlargement, one USB-C port, a USB-A port and a 3.5mm combo headphone/mic jack. That's nonetheless not a ton of ports, but it surely's far more than we might anticipate a laptop computer like this to function, particularly given the small dimension.
For a laptop computer that is inevitably going for use for varsity so much, enter additionally must be on level, and, nicely, it positively is. The Surface Laptop Go keyboard is likely one of the finest we have ever utilized in any laptop computer, even far more costly ones, and the trackpad does a wonderful job, and is even fairly massive, contemplating the footprint of the laptop computer.
Unfortunately, the Surface Laptop Go keyboard would not have backlit keys, which is certainly a disgrace for anybody that likes to work in dim lighting. We do not suppose it is a deal breaker, although, particularly at this worth. Plus, there is a fingerprint reader right here, which does have backlighting, which is certainly not one thing we might anticipate from most laptops on this worth vary.
The show can be a murals. Sure, it's kind of lower than Full HD, coming in with a decision of 1,536 x 1,024. That is a bit disappointing, however as a result of we're speaking a few 12.4-inch show, we did not even discover it wasn't Full HD till we appeared on the specs sheet. It nonetheless appears to be like unbelievable. A variety of that comes all the way down to the 102.6% sRGB protection and 300 nits of brightness that the three:2 show manages to hit.
Pretty a lot all the pieces goes to look unbelievable on this laptop computer, and the show is yet one more space the place the Surface Laptop Go hits method above its weight class.

Finally there's the audio system. Unlike just about another price range laptop computer, the audio system are literally underneath the keyboard, which is certainly bizarre, but it surely manages to supply sound that is method higher than a number of laptops on the market. While happening a Dorian Electra binge, music sounds extremely clear, even when the low-end is a bit muffled.
Pretty a lot in every single place you look, the Surface Laptop Go does issues that far more costly laptops do. If you are available on the market for an inexpensive laptop computer for both college or work - particularly for those who simply do a number of emails and phrase processing - the Surface Laptop Go is truthfully the very best Surface machine you should buy, even when different entries within the lineup are extra "premium".
Performance
Benchmarks
Here’s how the Surface Laptop Go carried out in our suite of benchmark checks:
Cinebench R20 CPU: 1,211 factors

PCMark 10 Battery Life: 11 hours quarter-hour

While we do have the highest-end Surface Laptop Go right here, it is essential to mood expectations with regards to uncooked efficiency. All we have now right here is an Intel Core i5-1035G1, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. That's positively not going to be a benchmark dominator, and it is not.
This processor is only a single step above a Core i3 chip, and has one of many weakest built-in GPUs within the Ice Lake lineup, which is why this laptop computer falls on its face everytime you do any sort of graphics workload. Basically, do not anticipate to do a lot gaming or video enhancing on this factor. That's completely nice, nevertheless, as a result of this laptop computer is certainly not constructed to deal with that sort of workload.
Instead, this laptop computer reveals its energy with regards to flippantly threaded web looking and phrase processing workloads, whereas the brilliant, colourful show and respectable audio system make it a sensible choice for watching Netflix in your downtime. That's all of the Surface Laptop Go actually units out to do, and it excels. Even when we have now 12 Chrome tabs open, with Slack and Spotify operating within the background, this laptop computer continues to soar.
Just like with any laptop computer buy, you have to resolve what you wish to do with this laptop computer earlier than you select it. If you'll be doing heavy photograph and video enhancing workloads, you are going to be higher off with one thing with extra horsepower.

Battery Life
With simply an Intel Core i5 processor, no backlit keyboard and a 1,024p show, the Surface Laptop Go ought to have some fairly super battery life. And, in our expertise it does - to a degree. In the PCMark 10 battery take a look at, the laptop computer lasted a whopping 11 hours and quarter-hour. That's spectacular.
And, in our native video playback take a look at, the laptop computer lasted 8 hours and 9 minutes, which is clearly a lot shorter.
Microsoft claims that the Surface Laptop Go can last as long as 13 hours, so it falls a bit quick there. You must also bear in mind that a few of our colleagues skilled a lot decrease battery life than we did. Your mileage might range.
