iRobot Roomba S9 Plus review

One-minute review

It’s been virtually 20 years because the unique Roomba robotic vacuum launched and now robotic vacuums are ten-a-penny, and a staple in lots of households.

iRobot’s newest incarnation, the Roomba S9 Plus, would possibly function on related ideas, however due to a bunch of high-tech options, it’s a really totally different beast from the primary iteration, and top-of-the-line robotic vacuums we have examined so far.

Most noticeably, it’ll empty itself, that means that somewhat than shaking out a mud field each few days, it’ll whisk out the contents from the vacuum right into a bag within the charging station. As the capability of the bag is 14.9oz / 440ml, which equates to round 30 cleans, this turns a day by day job right into a month-to-month one – nice for many who are time-poor or dislike emptying the mud field. There’s additionally a filter for allergy victims that captures 99 p.c of mould, pollen, and mud mite allergens.

Another characteristic that units the Roomba S9 Plus aside is a sophisticated mapping system. Rather than being gimmicky, this has a sensible goal, that means that the vacuum is aware of the place it’s been, and the place it nonetheless wants to wash, eliminating lengthy working occasions that also find yourself with missed patches. It’s referred to as vSLAM navigation expertise, the place the robotic gathers over 230,400 knowledge factors every second – leading to a greater clear and extra management over which areas are vacuumed and when. While the mapping can initially appear to be a chore, as soon as it’s up and working, this gives cleansing flexibility and effectivity that finances fashions can’t replicate.

A remaining benefit is that the Roomba S9 Plus is appropriate with the iRobot’s Braava jet m6 robotic mop. The two robots can ‘talk’ to one another, robotically vacuuming after which mopping with none further instructions, leaving hygienic flooring behind – nice for busy households, households, and properties with massive areas to wash.

In addition, the Roomba S9 Plus guarantees a strong cleansing system alongside its superior options, which embody a 3D sensor, wider brushes, and a nook brush.

There’s no denying that is an costly equipment however its cleansing capability, actually on arduous flooring, means we expect it truly is price it - making it best for people who need to outsource the vacuuming fully.

Design

Self-emptying bin
30% wider rubber brushes
Convenient management buttons on high

While the iRobot Roomba S9 Plus doesn’t look dissimilar to earlier Roomba fashions – its rose-gold lid hiding the bin being one of many extra noticeable variations – it’s host to many enhancements. These embody wider Dual Rubber Brushes (in comparison with the Roomba 600 series) and a brush with 5 angled arms to essentially get into corners and alongside partitions. On high there are simply three buttons – one to start out and cease it cleansing, one for spot cleansing and one to ship it house – all of that are helpful if you happen to don’t have your system handy.

Compared to some, it’s a reasonably weighty machine to hold from room to room at 8.15lb / 3.7kg, however not too massive. Its peak of three.5 inches / 9cm isn’t too tall to tuck underneath most beds though it might be too tall to suit beneath some sofas. The Roomba S9+ is a mean 12.25 inches / 31cm huge however it’s the charging station you might battle to seek out room for. At 19 inches / 48cm tall and 12.2 inches / 31cm huge it takes up a good quantity of house towards a wall, particularly when permitting for the prompt clearance of 1.5ft / 50cm both facet on high.

Set-up was pretty easy because it’s all accomplished by way of the app (see beneath) however it may be irritating ready for it to map your property as a non-negotiable first activity. There’s an additional filter and nook brush included within the field, plus a few grime disposal baggage. It could be a small factor however even the luggage be sure to gained’t ever have to come back into contact with the mud out of your flooring – every one seals up because it’s faraway from the charging station.

Performance

Good mud pick-up on carpets and arduous flooring
Power Boost will increase suction for carpets
Noisy when emptying

The iRobot Roomba S9 Plus sucked up all of the tremendous mud, biscuit crumbs, and oats we sprinkled on arduous flooring however it did go away some tremendous mud behind on our medium-pile carpet, each on the Quiet clear setting and the extra highly effective Detailed clear. That mentioned, even our regular vacuum cleaner struggled to select up the tremendous flour afterwards, suggesting that it was pretty embedded within the pile after being rolled over a couple of occasions.

Overall, we have been impressed by the cleansing effectivity of the iRobot Roomba S9 Plus – whereas it might nonetheless get caught on rugs, it reached the perimeters of rooms to whisk away mud and navigated furnishings properly. The Power Boost characteristic robotically elevated the suction when it detected carpets, too.

It is pretty noisy in comparison with different robotic vacuums registering 61db on carpet and 64db on a tough flooring on our decibel meter when utilizing the Detailed Clean mode, which is equal to the sound of dialog in an workplace. While this stage is appropriate, the automated emptying averaged 77.5db - the identical stage of noise skilled when 25 ft away from a car touring at 65mph, so it could be finest to maintain the charging station out of a social space.

Clean-up after vacuuming was easy because the iRobot Roomba S9 Plus empties into the charging station, though the mud bag wants changing after it’s been emptied into round 30 occasions (making for a month-to-month or bi-monthly empty). It’s truly the filter that wants extra upkeep with a prompt weekly shake to wash (or twice every week when you've got pets). It’s positioned throughout the robotic’s mud field, so you'll have to get a little bit messy to take away it, however it’s price doing to take care of the filter’s anti-allergen properties.

App

Connects by way of WiFi
Alexa and Google Assistant appropriate
Find your Roomba characteristic

Connecting the iRobot Roomba S9 Plus to WiFi utilizing the app was comparatively simple though we needed to transfer location a few occasions earlier than it labored. The app itself isn’t sophisticated – there’s a historical past of earlier cleans, the power to avoid wasting one as your favourite, particulars of the room map (with the power to call every house and divide it as you see match) plus a bit for schedules. One considerate contact is which you can identify your vacuum cleaner – helpful when you've got two on totally different flooring.

It took a while for us to work out methods to change the suction stage - an choice that's caught within the settings somewhat than being on the preliminary launch display. Voice integration (obtainable for Alexa and Google Home) can be not particularly apparent – it’s hidden inside a bit labeled Smart Home. However, as soon as linked, you'll be able to ask for it to start out vacuuming, clear a particular room, or return to its dock.

One characteristic we did like is the power to seek out your Roomba by tapping the app so the vacuum makes a noise. This got here in helpful when the robotic vacuum grew to become caught underneath a mattress.

Battery life

Will ‘intelligently recharge’ for the period of time wanted to proceed cleansing
Battery takes round three hours to completely recharge from flat
Indicator stage doesn’t present a proportion

iRobot doesn’t make claims about how lengthy the Roomba S9 Plus’s battery lasts between expenses – maybe it is because it’ll fortunately return to its charging station if it’s working low, and recharge simply sufficient to complete the job.

Our floor flooring clear took just below an hour, and on the app, the battery stage seemed about half-full, though we’d have most popular if the indicator confirmed a proportion somewhat than us having to guess how a lot cost was left. It took three hours to completely recharge the S9+.
