Two-minute review

The iPhone 13 doesn’t carry with it an enormous variety of new options, nevertheless it does enhance on the iPhone 12 in a number of areas – mainly battery life, energy, show and cameras – to make this one of the vital spectacular all-round handsets we’ve seen from Apple.

On paper, you’d be laborious pressed to discover a purpose why Apple didn’t name this cellphone the iPhone 12S. The design is essentially the identical, the specs don’t look vastly completely different, and there aren’t many headline-grabbing new options.

However, all the pieces on the iPhone 13 is a contact higher than earlier than – and a few parts are considerably higher.

The spotlight of the iPhone 13 is its battery life. Previously, iPhones haven’t been synonymous with robust battery life, however throughout daily of our testing we’ve been hard-pressed to run the iPhone 13 out of juice.

Apple has lastly cracked it in terms of battery life, and it is now much better than it has been on earlier iPhone iterations.

The iPhone 13’s new A15 Bionic chipset, in the meantime, is extremely highly effective, and paired with 4GB of RAM it’s able to operating a number of apps and duties shortly and effectively.

A brand new duo digicam for the iPhone 13 improves readability in photographs, whereas the introduction of the corporate’s Sensor Shift optical picture stabilization (OIS) expertise, beforehand solely out there on Apple’s Pro Max handsets, is a giant deal for many who need to shoot shortly with out dropping their topic in a blur.

Even the display screen on the iPhone 13 is a contact higher than what we’ve seen on earlier ‘standard’ iPhones, and that’s a giant deal when you’re upgrading from an iPhone XS or older. The OLED expertise right here allows a brighter image than ever, and the image high quality is just improbable.

One disappointment, nonetheless, is that Apple hasn’t included a 120Hz refresh price on the iPhone 13, so that you’re not getting as clean an expertise as on the iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max.

As ever, Apple’s new iPhone will value you, with the iPhone 13 worth beginning at $799 / £779 / AU$1,349 – though this yr that will get you 128GB of storage, quite than the 64GB of the base-model iPhone 12.

While at first look the iPhone 13 might not look like a terrific leap ahead for Apple, the improved battery life, efficiency, display screen and digicam all add as much as be a worthwhile improve for anybody who’s coming from an older iPhone, or trying to make the change from Android.

Design

If you personal an iPhone 12, you’re unlikely to see a giant distinction between that handset and the iPhone 13. If, nonetheless, you personal an older iPhone, or an Android system, you’re actually going to see some variations.

The new iPhone incorporates a flat-edge design, which debuted with the iPhone 12 vary. That means the design is a contact extra angular than the rounded end of earlier iterations, however the cellphone remains to be snug to make use of one-handed.

The entrance and rear of the handset are glass, however solely the entrance panel has Apple’s patented Ceramic Shield expertise, launched on final yr’s iPhone 12 . Apple says this affords 4 instances the drop resistance of the glass on older iPhones, however we nonetheless wouldn’t suggest placing this declare to the check.

We’ve but to drop this handset, nevertheless it’s comforting to know that the Ceramic Shield tech is there as a security internet – though we’d be extra comforted if it was on the rear of the cellphone too.

On the topic of sturdiness, the iPhone 13 series is IP68 mud and waterproof, which implies it might probably survive in as much as six meters of water for a interval of half-hour. Don’t count on this handset to be totally waterproof, nevertheless it’ll survive the odd dunk.

On the left fringe of the cellphone are the silence change, the quantity buttons and the SIM tray. The proper edge hosts simply the facility button, so it’s straightforward to seek out together with your thumb or finger once you’re making an attempt to wake the handset.

On the underside edge are the audio system, and the Lightning port connector for charging and information switch.

We discovered the iPhone 13 was straightforward to make use of one-handed – it measures 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.7mm – though in order for you a really one-handed system, or you've smaller arms, the iPhone 13 mini could also be a better option.

The iPhone 13 weighs a contact greater than the iPhone 12, at 174g in comparison with 164g, nevertheless it’s not one thing you’ll discover in on a regular basis use, and it’s roughly the norm for a cellphone of this kind.

The rear of the iPhone 13 is apparent, however appears to be like refined, with the Apple emblem taking heart stage and the digicam module on the top-left. A minor change this yr is that the corporate has opted to rearrange the primary lenses within the digicam array diagonally, quite than vertically as on earlier iPhones.

Every colour selection for the iPhone 13 (Image credit score: Apple)

There are 5 colour choices for the iPhone 13: Blue, Midnight, Starlight (a cream colour), Product Red and Pink – the shade you see pictured all through this review.

These shades are quite muted, and when you’re not a fan of any of them it's possible you'll need to grasp on and see if Apple introduces extra colours at a later date – the corporate launched a purple iPhone 12 round six months after that cellphone first launched.

If you personal an iPhone 12, you must be aware that the instances for that handset received’t match the brand new model.

Display

The show on the iPhone 13 is 6.1 inches, with a decision of 2532 x 1170. That decision equates to 460 pixels per inch, which isn’t the most effective we’ve seen available on the market however is completely appropriate for on a regular basis use – we didn’t discover we ever wanted the next decision, even when watching video or taking part in video games.

There are skinny bezels across the handset’s display screen, and a few of the show can be taken up with the notch on the prime. Yes, there’s nonetheless a notch on the iPhone 13, nevertheless it’s 20% smaller than the notch on the iPhone 12, supplying you with a contact extra display screen actual property.

It’s not a giant change, nevertheless it’s noticeable once you examine the handset to the iPhone 12. It’s one thing you’ll shortly develop used to although.

An necessary be aware right here is that the iPhone 13 show doesn’t get the brand new 120Hz refresh price that Apple debuted on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max – the shows on these telephones refresh twice as quick as an ordinary 60Hz display screen for a smoother expertise when scrolling websites or taking part in video games.

If you’ve skilled this expertise earlier than – it’s now frequent now on numerous Android telephones – you’ll discover the distinction right here, though it’s a characteristic that’s good to have, quite than indispensable.

Going on the headline specs, the iPhone 13 digicam setup doesn’t look that completely different to the array on final yr’s model, however you’re getting some worthwhile upgrades right here, with tweaks to the cameras themselves in addition to quite a lot of software program updates.

You’ve received two cameras on the rear: a 12MP broad digicam with an aperture of f/1.6, and a 12MP ultrawide digicam with a f/2.4 aperture and a 120-degree discipline of view. There’s no telephoto shooter right here – you’re reliant on digital zoom, so this cellphone isn’t going to be the most effective for grabbing long-distance pictures.

When not capturing at a distance, it is a improbable and versatile expertise. The major digicam makes use of 1.7µm pixels (up from 1.4µm on the iPhone 12) that give a noticeable distinction to the image high quality right here.

You’re additionally getting Apple’s Sensor Shift OIS expertise, which debuted in final yr’s iPhone 12 Pro Max, and which affords the most effective picture stabilization we’ve seen on an iPhone, enabling you to get sharp pictures even once you’re not capable of hold the cellphone completely nonetheless.

There’s much less noise in photographs taken in most situations than in comparable pictures from the iPhone 12, and there have been few conditions the place the digicam didn’t carry out to the extent we’d count on – it’s a terrific point-and-shoot expertise.

The ultra-wide digicam’s 120-degree discipline of view is helpful once you need to get extra of your topic or scene in, however we principally discovered ourselves sticking with the primary digicam.

There’s digital zoom as much as 5x, however the outcomes aren’t very spectacular, and also you’ll discover that many different smartphones are extra succesful on this space, though it’s certainly not a necessary characteristic.

Another new characteristic right here is Photographic Styles, which you'll entry by the digicam app. These allow you to use customized appears to be like to your photographs, comparable to Rich Contrast, Vibrant, Warm and Cool.

These are helpful when you have a specific fashion of capturing, and the concept is that not like a easy filter they may enable the cellphone to use changes to completely different parts of a picture. We didn’t discover this made an enormous distinction to our capturing, nevertheless it’s one other device in your pictures arsenal.

On the entrance of the cellphone is a 12MP f/2.2 broad digicam that we discovered labored properly for selfies and video calls. The entrance cameras on iPhones have been spectacular for a while now, and whereas there aren't any huge enhancements right here you’ll be proud of the outcomes you get.

You can shoot video on the iPhone 13 at 4K at 24, 30 and 60 frames per second, in addition to Full HD at 30, 60, 120 and 240fps.

The huge video recording improve is the introduction of Cinematic Mode that permits you to movie with a bokeh impact the place the background of your shot is blurred. The impact additionally follows faces which can be within the body, so it will change between topics.

We've discovered this to work properly, nevertheless it takes some getting used to and it's possible you'll must mess around with it a number of instances to have the ability to get absolutely the good shot. This is a enjoyable device although, and it is one thing it's possible you'll get pleasure from when you like taking part in round with video modes.
