Two minute review
We have a tendency to not anticipate a lot in relation to the set high bins from all-in-one TV and broadband suppliers. But BT has all the time sat among the many large boys in relation to its BT TV set high bins, because of their inclusion of the superb time-travelling YouView interface.
The new BT TV Box Pro is a slick and succesful set high field with a wonderful search operate, intelligent suggestion programs and top-tier cinematic options like 4K HDR visuals and Dolby Atmos sound.
Wi-Fi enabled, with 4 tuners that allow you to report three exhibits directly while watching one other, the BT TV Box Pro’s 1TB cupboard space is nice for holding on to round 600 hours of (commonplace definition) recordings relying on their decision high quality.
With entry to premium TV channels from the likes of Sky, and with BT’s personal sizeable sports activities providing within the type of BT Sport Ultimate, you’ll be onerous pressed to search out one thing you can’t watch on the BT TV Box Pro – particularly contemplating main web TV suppliers like Netflix and Amazon are inbuilt. Even higher, a common search possibility permits you to hunt for no matter present or film you’re after from one centralised place, letting you search by means of all of the suppliers directly quite than having to dive out and in of every particular person app.

Fast, steady, and that includes a smooth industrial design that you simply received’t have to cover away, the BT TV Box Pro is a top-notch possibility for BT prospects trying to increase their TV viewing choices.
Price and availability
The BT TV Box Pro is offered as a part of a 24 month contract by means of BT. An activation payment of £20 is required, alongside a postage price of £9.99. Those charges apart, there’s no upfront cost for the field itself, with the {hardware} subsidised by the month-to-month charges. They range relying on the breadth of the bundle you join, with an entry bundle beginning at £12, and a VIP bundle, together with entry to the premium sports activities and Sky TV packages, costing £65 a month:
- VIP - £65 per 30 days
- Big Sport - £40 per 30 days
- Big Entertainment - £22 per 30 days
- Sport - £15 per 30 days
- Entertainment - £12 per 30 days
It’s a pricing tier that scales properly to your funds and viewing habits then, however notice that the BT TV Box Pro actually comes into its personal whenever you’ve entry to the total breadth of its content material choices. It’s the VIP bundle that we’ve been testing the field alongside for review, for reference.
Design
The BT TV Box Pro is about as engaging in design as a set high field will get. Low profile with curving edges, it’s a easy matte black field with gloss trim, with an inoffensive BT emblem on the entrance that glows to point out the field’s standing.
Spin the field round and alongside an influence enter you’ve acquired aerial in, aerial out, USB (for firmware updates), Ethernet and an optical sound port, in addition to a 4K HDR succesful HDMI port. Note that there’s no SCART enter right here, so for those who’re nonetheless on a a lot older TV set, it’s time to improve.
As properly as Ethernet, the field helps Wi-Fi connectivity, and comes with 1TB of inbuilt cupboard space for recordings. That’s the equal of round 600 hours of recordings, although that determine shall be considerably much less for those who load up on 4K footage, dropping down to simply 60 hours. Four onboard tuners enable for 3 channels to be recorded concurrently while watching a fourth stay program, too, that means there’s little probability you’ll should undergo lacking one thing if there’s a conflict.

For the energy-conscious on the market, there’s a stable choice of eco settings to tweak, together with a ‘Smart’ standby mode that may put the field right into a deep-sleep state through the hours you’re least prone to be utilizing it.
A full sized distant comes with the bundle, and works over a Bluetooth connection to the field, that means line of sight isn’t wanted to speak with the field, permitting you to pop it out of sight in an AV cupboard. Playback controls, a common search button and supply and quantity controls are included (although the large “BT” round button on the high, which is definitely an influence button, was a bit complicated at first as I instinctively anticipated it to convey me to the field’s residence display).
Interface
The BT TV Box Pro interface is evident and straightforward to navigate. It’s cut up into horizontal panes (Live TV, Featured Apps, Recordings and Watch List, BT Player, TV Shows, Films and Sport) every of which scrolls to point out a mix of featured content material and stay programming, relying on the pane.
With the YouView interface as its spine, the BT TV Box Pro’s tv information is great. As properly as letting you filter between all channels, HD and Ultra HD channels, subscription channels and channels grouped by style, you may as well scroll again in time as much as seven days into the previous to search for exhibits you’ve missed. Once you’ve discovered them you'll be able to nonetheless press on what you’d like to look at, with the interface well discovering the corresponding catch up content material, the place accessible. There’s much less stay 4K broadcasting than discovered on some competing bins, notably that of Sky Q – however with the inbuilt apps considered it is best to have a lot to get essentially the most out of your flashy TV with. Note too that whereas the information has a slight transparency so you'll be able to vaguely see the present behind it, it doesn’t characteristic picture-in-picture viewing for those who’re making an attempt to maintain monitor of what’s on display whereas trying to find one other present.
Though third occasion apps like Amazon Prime Video additionally provide further one-off purchases for movies and TV, the BT TV participant is probably going the place you’ll nab most of your leases and movie purchases on the BT TV Box Pro. It’s cut up right into a Film Store, TV Store, Sport, Kids and a My Zone part to entry your purchases. It’s all properly editorialised, with trending objects that includes prominently primarily based on latest entertainment large hits, and priced in keeping with different digital retailer fronts.
There’s a wide variety of apps accessible to look at on demand content material, together with BBC iPlayer, Britbox, Netflix, Now TV and Amazon Prime Video, giving a wide array of programming accessible by means of a single field. There are a few large omissions although. The greatest one is Disney Plus, which isn’t accessible by means of the field; neither is YouTube, Spotify, Apple TV or indie-flick library Mubi.
The significance of those will range relying on the capabilities of your sensible TV itself – there’s a superb probability these apps shall be inbuilt there, anyway. But for those who’re in search of a one-stop field, the BT TV Box Pro is lacking some large names. Also, frustratingly, Channel 4’s All4 content material may be accessed by means of search, however there’s no method to dive into the All4 app itself to browse its library.
BT TV’s common search software is nice, although. Hit the magnifying glass on the distant and you'll seek for exhibits, films and actors throughout all the built-in companies constructed into the set high field. For occasion, a seek for “Daniel Craig” will reveal Craig’s Bond films for buy on Amazon Prime Video, Knives Out by way of the Now TV subscription, Sword of Honour on demand with Channel 4’s All4, and Logan Lucky to lease or purchase by means of BT TV’s personal retailer (to call just some of dozens of outcomes). It additionally collates upcoming broadcast TV exhibits in an “On Now & Later” part. It’s an in depth and complete approach of discovering what you’re after.
The recordings part is especially good too. Not solely does it allow you to handle your recordings, locking vital recordings and exhibiting you remaining house to your onerous drive, it additionally features a watch record part the place you'll be able to notice and save exhibits in your hit record throughout content material platforms, be that stay TV, or apps like Netflix. It’s an excellent characteristic that we’d like to see rivals like Sky Q combine.
It’s value noting that the BT TV Box Pro additionally works alongside the BT TV cellular apps. These allow you to remotely schedule recordings, allow you to watch stay TV on the go, and entry any paid-for movie or TV purchases while out and about too. It doesn’t nevertheless allow you to entry your stay recordings remotely.
Performance
The total efficiency of the BT TV Box Pro is high notch. It’s attentive to distant management inputs, and pulls in metadata and search knowledge rapidly. Changing between apps is speedy, and there was no notable lag when transferring by means of the field’s many channels and viewing choices. Lots of the field’s visualisations, be that movie and TV previews and art work, or the catch-up streams themselves, shall be depending on the standard and pace of your broadband connection although, so take that into consideration earlier than committing to the contract.
