Windows 11 runs on PC with ancient single-core Intel Pentium 4 CPU

Windows 11 might have system necessities which have brought about controversy by ruling out even comparatively fashionable PCs, however the OS can in truth run on a pc powered by a single-core Intel Pentium 4 (Cedar Mill) processor that’s 15 years previous. This quite startling feat was achieved by ‘Carlos SM’ who tweeted about it after which shared a video to point out how the ancient system runs, as noticed by PC Mag.

As you'll be able to see, the complete spec of the PC includes of an Intel Pentium 4 661 (1-core, 2-thread) CPU in an Asus P5Q (LGA 775) motherboard, with 4GB of DDR2 RAM (at 800MHz) and an Nvidia GeForce GT 710 graphics card. A 120GB SSD is current for storage (with Carlos offering a CPU-Z validation of the system, too). That {hardware} was ok for Carlos to put in Windows 11, going the route of utilizing a Windows 10 PE Installer, and noting that “Windows 11 is installed in MBR/Legacy Boot mode, no EFI emulation involved”.Carlos additional observes that Windows Update works on the PC simply effective, and he put in the latest Patch Tuesday cumulative replace for Windows 11 and not using a downside. That stated, as you may count on, Microsoft’s OS is on the sluggish aspect at instances operating on this {hardware} configuration.

Analysis: New OS, previous machines – however not with out dangers

It’s fairly eye-opening simply how low-powered a PC can get and nonetheless run Windows 11, particularly provided that the exhausting ground of the system necessities requires a dual-core CPU, not a single-core model as used right here. The large stumbling block for a lot of machines is the TPM 2.0 stipulation, which Microsoft has applied for safety causes (in addition to Secure Boot), and unsurprisingly this venerable PC has neither. As we’ve seen, although, and even written a information about ourselves, it's potential to improve to Windows 11 on a non-TPM machine with workarounds which Microsoft has made identified. But even then, the software program big strongly warns in opposition to doing so, suggesting that it may result in ‘device malfunction’ and even ‘damage’, and also you’re not assured to obtain updates (however as Carlos has discovered, you will get them – at the very least for now).

Clearly, although, it's an odd scenario the place it’s potential to put in Windows 11 on a PC with a shouldn’t-be-supported single-core CPU utilizing an unofficial methodology, and but you'll be able to’t have an official set up on a PC with a processor from Intel’s Seventh-gen vary which emerged solely 5 years in the past. Carlos additionally tweets to notice that this Pentium CPU isn’t even the oldest you could possibly boot Windows 11 with, as effectively.
