The Sonos Beam is a powerful soundbar, and simply one of many smartest in the marketplace, supporting the whole lot from Alexa to Apple's AirPlay 2 – even when the Sonos Arc has since eclipsed it due to Dolby Atmos assist.
It's sensible within the new sense of the phrase (see: sensible audio system just like the Amazon Echo and Google Home) however, due to its inclusion of Sonos' multi-room audio tech, it is even simpler to make use of and extra well-connected than the competitors, too.
If something's mistaken with the Beam it is that that is solely Sonos' third try at a TV-connected speaker and, subsequently, is not as streamlined as different soundbars in the marketplace. It's additionally not filled with the most recent and best in residence theater tech, like Dolby Atmos or DTS Virtual:X, that creates a extra immersive expertise.
If you may overlook the Beam's lack of cutting-edge options and as an alternative on deal with its sensible capabilities and multi-room platform, nevertheless, it is a improbable product and one which's effectively value shopping for for any budding AV fanatic.
[Update: There's a new version of the Sonos Beam available to preorder now. The new Sonos Beam (Gen 2) comes with Dolby Atmos and HDMI eARC compatibility, but shares the same acoustic architecture and a similar design to its predecessor. If you want to buy the original Sonos Beam, you'll need to be quick - it's now been discontinued, and will probably be discounted in the run up to Black Friday 2021.]
Our unique review follows under:
Sonos Beam design
Let's first take a look at the place the Sonos Beam matches inside Sonos' product household: there are at the moment 5 Sonos audio system (the Sonos Move, Sonos One, Sonos Play:1, Sonos Play:3 and Sonos Play:5) and 4 residence theater audio setups (Sonos Arc, Sonos PlayBar, Sonos PlayBase, and the Sonos Beam) you should purchase proper now. And that is not together with add-ons just like the Sonos Sub.

The Sonos Beam is broadly thought of the entry-level soundbar of the product line-up. The dimension of the Sonos Beam is essential. It’s a soundbar that may fortunately sit in entrance of a 32-inch arrange or a 40-inch plus TV. (We ought to know, as we examined it on each variants.)
Measuring 650 x 100 x 68.5mm, it’s a lot smaller than its super-sized sibling, the Sonos PlayBar. In reality, it’s 60% smaller (and that may be mentioned of the worth, too) however has the addition of HDMI connectivity - one thing the Sonos PlayBar sorely lacked.
It’s a slick-looking machine, taking its design cues from each the Sonos One and the Sonos Play:5. The controls on the highest are contact delicate and look equivalent to the Sonos One.
The setup is easy: a 4 dot sq. on the left for quantity down, the identical on the best for up and a play/pause button within the center. Above that is the flexibility to show the speaker mic on and off.
We almost slipped there and referred to as it the Alexa mic, as that's what it at the moment is. But Sonos can be one of many solely audio system to assist each Google Assistant and Siri. Sonos isn’t completely satisfied to talk with one voice however many and it’s a sensible, shrewd transfer by the corporate. There is certainly an ‘if you can’t beat them, be part of them’ mentality with Sonos in the meanwhile.
That doesn’t imply that it has scrimped on design high quality. The 43,000 hand-drilled holes might now not be there - one thing the over-engineered PlayBase boasted - but it surely’s nonetheless a lovely-looking machine. Instead of a metallic grille, material is draped over the opening to the audio system.
The soundbar may be mounted or plonked in entrance of the TV. With a depth of 100mm, most TVs will fortunately have it sit in entrance of them and it not impinge on the precise display screen, merely block the stand.
Inside the Sonos Beam are 4 full-range drivers, a middle tweeter and three passive radiators that are there so as to add to the bass. These drivers work collectively to assist the speaker ship sound someplace in between a Sonos Play:3 and Sonos PlayBar. The audio system inside have been specifically made for the Beam, although, so there is no such thing as a recycling right here by Sonos.

The Sonos Beam is designed for three-channels, however it may almost make these three channels sound like true encompass sound due to Trueplay - a software program function that calibrates the sound to the room.
The magic occurs throughout setup when the speaker asks you to make use of your pill or smartphone to ‘scan’ the room (basically wave your machine round whereas the speaker performs a series of sounds).
When Trueplay is enabled, the room fills with sound - it looks like it really works higher with one thing like a soundbar because the radius is that a lot bigger. If you’re an Android person, sadly you'll miss out on this selection as Trueplay is just accessible by iOS units in the meanwhile.
Flip the machine round and the ports are minimal. There’s an ethernet, HDMI slot, energy and a Wi-Fi button.
Sonos Beam setup
Setup of the Sonos Beam is two-fold. If your TV has HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel, there will likely be an emblem close to the HDMI slot), then it’s a cinch. HDMI ARC permits the Beam to sync up audio and movie and have the whole lot working by your TV’s distant in a matter of minutes.
That final half is fairly essential for the Sonos Beam because the machine doesn’t include a distant. As with all Sonos merchandise, the concept is that you simply use the Sonos app to manage quantity, {link} up audio system and the like. This is okay however in a house theater state of affairs, you need this as an addition quite than the only solution to management your speaker. And that’s why Sonos selected HDMI ARC.
Without HDMI ARC, issues turn out to be just a little extra sophisticated. Sonos has carried out its due diligence, although, and added in an optical adaptor to the arrange. Plug this into the accompanying HDMI cable and you need to use the Beam by the optical port.
To make it work correctly, nevertheless, you must delve into the settings of the Sonos app (and those in your TV, too).
In our checks, we needed to reconfigure the Beam in order that it will routinely come on when the TV was turned on. Obviously, you don’t have to do that but it surely means going into the app each time if it isn't sorted.

It wasn’t very clear the place and the way to do that, however after a couple of minutes of going by myriad menus, we discovered the TV Autoplay setting in Room Setting>TV. It’s additionally right here you could configure the distant management setup. Follow the directions on the app and it is best to have the distant working along with your Beam very quickly.
While we didn’t thoughts going by the app, it’s clear that Sonos would like you utilize HDMI Arc. Its app, whereas nice sufficient, is at the moment setup to assist extra with ensuring your Sonos system works in unison with some other Sonos units you could have and to not configure a house theater system. Now it has the PlayBar, PlayBase and the Beam, although, we will see this altering sooner or later.
To give the app some credit score, alongside the 60+ audio providers which might be appropriate with it, it does have various good residence theater choices. Two of essentially the most used are located simply above the quantity slider. These are Night Sound (which takes out any booming bass, so you may watch one thing when the remainder of your clan are in mattress) and Speech Enhancement. Since utilizing the Beam we have now had Speech Enhancement on virtually on a regular basis and it’s actually helped with the readability of speech, particularly in any scenes we're watching which might be filled with bombast.
Dig into the room settings and there's additionally an EQ choice (with bass and treble sliders and a Loudness button), and TV Dialog settings which lets you sync the voice if it’s just a little off (one thing you gained’t get utilizing HDMI ARC).
Sonos Beam voice management
There is, in fact, one other solution to management the Sonos Beam, and that's along with your voice. One of the large options of the Beam is its Alexa integration. This is one thing that was first seen on the Sonos One (the place it really works extraordinarily effectively), however utilizing Alexa to manage part of a tv is an entire different matter. It’s one thing that’s occurring an increasing number of - Alexa voice management is now accessible with the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick and additionally it is accessible within the Amazon Fire TV Cube.
There’s a thread right here: all of those merchandise are Amazon based mostly, and you will have an Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick to get essentially the most out of the Sonos Beam’s voice performance. If certainly one of these are plugged into your TV, then the Beam affords up the ability to go looking Netflix and Amazon Prime - one thing which is enjoyable, if nonetheless just a little awkward, to do.
Without Amazon’s back-end tech, you may nonetheless use the voice controls for issues like quantity (Alexa, flip it up 30% and so on), to request radio stations and to pause and play no matter you might be listening to. You may even have the ability to flip your TV on and off with Alexa in case you are utilizing HDMI ARC.
It’s enjoyable, if a contact restricted. And talking of contact, we discovered ourselves utilizing the intuitive contact controls on the highest of the Beam way over we thought that we'd.
The excellent news is that you've a bevy of sensible assistants to name upon if you wish to go hands-free. There's Alexa, AirPlay 2 and Siri integration, and now Google Assistant in a lot of the main English-speaking territories.
While it is nonetheless early days for the triple-powered sensible soundbar, we will not wait to see how this partnership evolves over time. Knowing how egalitarian Sonos is making an attempt to be right here makes us recognize the soundbar much more - making the soundbar as open as it may presumably be is an admirable, formidable objective in any case.
