The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is lastly right here – should you had been questioning 'what's occurring with the Z Flip 2', nicely it appears the 5G model of the authentic Galaxy Flip technically counted as that, regardless of the lack of the quantity (or another improve).
Launched alongside the Z Fold 3, and identical to that larger foldable cellphone, you may discover the Z Flip 3 is extra of an iterative replace on its predecessor than a vastly totally different system, although there are some welcome tweaks. The 'large' change right here is that the value is decrease than the authentic Flip, although the discount actually is not sufficient to make the Z Flip 3 a extra interesting system should you weren't already entranced by a trendy flip cellphone.
This is the greatest clamshell foldable cellphone there may be proper now - although that is not saying a lot, given the solely competitors is the Motorola Razr 2020 or the authentic Z Flip. The truth of the matter is, nonetheless, that even with this discount in asking value, the Z Flip 3 simply is not price the price proper now if the flipping novelty is not sufficient.
Aside from folding performance, the Z Flip 3 would not justify its price ticket – in addition to some points with the type issue, like the truth there's a hole in the cellphone once you shut it, how stiff it's to shut, or the fingerprint scanner's uncomfortably excessive placement on the proper aspect, it has issues that'd plague any smartphone expertise like a tiny battery and unexciting cameras.
Tucking the cellphone in a pocket is actually enjoyable, and it is relieving to know the interior display is protected against nicks and scratches whereas it is folded closed. While the 1.9-inch exterior display is certainly almost 4 occasions bigger than the 1.1-inch show of its predecessors, the larger outer display is hit and miss on usefulness – good for previewing selfies, useful for seeing notifications, however its contact controls are finicky if you wish to kind stated notifications.
So whereas the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a neat celebration trick and trend assertion, it isn't as nice as a regular smartphone for day-to-day actions. You could desire to spend your cash on a inflexible system, as a result of foldables simply aren't there but.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 launch date and value
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is available in two storage sizes: 128GB, which prices $999 / £949 / AU$1,499, or 256GB which can set you again $1,049 / £999 / AU$1,599
For comparability, the authentic Galaxy Flip price $1,380 / £1,300 / AU$1,800, and the 5G model was much more at $1,449 / £1,399 / AU$2,599. So the Flip 3 is certainly extra inexpensive, though it’s nonetheless a whole lot greater than what you’d pay for a lot of top-spec non-folding gadgets.
One factor we should always level out, although, is that the authentic Flip misplaced its worth fairly shortly, and is now accessible brand-new for lower than the Flip 3’s launch value. Oh, and should you had been to purchase a inflexible cellphone with the Z Flip 3's specs, you possibly can most likely save about $1,000 / £1,000 / AU$2,000.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 goes on sale on August 27, with preorders open now. In Australia, the pre-order date is the similar, however the handset gained’t begin transport till September 10.
Design and show
To take a look at it, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 doesn’t appear to supply a lot that’s totally different from its predecessor. But appears might be deceiving, and when you get the cellphone in your hand you’ll discover some enhancements.
The cellphone has a ‘Glasstic’ plastic again with glass surrounding the digicam module, not like the all-glass authentic, and whereas its dimensions and weight are principally the similar as earlier than, the new cellphone feels sturdier to carry. Plastic is extra drop-resistant than glass, and is mostly simpler to grip too, which means the Flip gained’t slide out of a moist hand.
Some of this reassuring firmness of the cellphone might be because of the hinge mechanism, which feels much less wobbly and safer than the one on the first Flip.
Like the authentic Galaxy Z Flip, the Z Flip 3 has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner; and as on the authentic, that is a little arduous to achieve when the cellphone is unfolded. There’s additionally considerably of a hole between the two halves when the cellphone is folded, which makes the cellphone much less hardy on this place than it may appear. The hole is smaller than in the authentic Z Flip, however we would really feel safer that it might take a drop and preserve out mud if either side had been flush.
One of the authentic Z Flip’s weirder design selections returns right here: when folded, the Z Flip 3 is nearly sq. in {shape}, and simply as extensive as your common smartphone. That means it may be a little bit of a squeeze for smaller pockets, even when the cellphone isn’t so long as your common handset. Folding it makes it twice as thick, too, so it is extra correct to say the cellphone will match some pockets and baggage with out a drawback however will not match in any respect in others.
The cellphone is available in a few totally different colours, together with beige, black, inexperienced and purple, although some are unique to Samsung’s web site relying in your area.

The predominant show is the similar 6.7-inch FHD+ panel as the 2020 model, although its refresh fee has been bumped as much as 120Hz. The folding mechanism isn’t too apparent behind the show, not like on the authentic Flip and all the Fold fashions, which is a good change, although it’s nonetheless not completely hidden by any means.
Bigger enhancements have been made to the outer show, which was 1.1 inches on the authentic Flip however will get a sizable enhance to 1.9 inches right here. This makes it simpler to see the redesigned format for this show, which is beneficial attributable to new settings which allow you to change the apps on the cowl show to imitate your Galaxy Watch 4.
As beforehand talked about, although, the exterior show is nice to take a look at however more durable to work together with if you wish to kind via your notifications – and do not even consider using it to kind or work together with.
Cameras and battery life
This goes to be a pretty quick part, as each the headline digicam specs and the battery are the similar on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 as on its predecessors.
On the again are 12MP extensive and 12MP ultra-wide snappers, though the sensors have larger pixels than these in the authentic Flip, so photos are a little brighter and extra colourful. The 10MP entrance snapper can be primarily unchanged, although we don’t learn about the sensor measurement right here.
The assortment of digicam modes appears equivalent too. There’s Flex Mode, so you possibly can part-fold the cellphone at a right-angle and use one aspect as a stand to maintain the different, camera-toting aspect regular, together with the commonplace modes you’ll discover on the Galaxy S21. Zooming is all-digital, and goes as much as 10x.
The digicam setup right here doesn’t evaluate to what you’ll discover on different current Samsung flagships like the S21, so don’t purchase this cellphone anticipating to take implausible pictures.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 has the similar 3,300mAh battery as its predecessor, which is on the gentle aspect for a cellphone with a 6.7-inch show, however we’re guessing the type issue restricts how giant the energy pack might be. As that is a hands-on evaluation we haven’t had sufficient time but to correctly check the cellphone’s stamina, however we discovered that the authentic Flip typically struggled to final a entire day.

There’s no change to the 15W charging both, which we’d contemplate gradual if the battery wasn’t comparatively small. There’s additionally wi-fi charging right here, which works higher when the cellphone is folded shut attributable to the charging coil’s placement in the cellphone.
Performance and specs
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 brings some small efficiency upgrades over its predecessor – chief amongst these are that it makes use of the Snapdragon 888 chipset, the top-end Android processor accessible to it (save for a Plus model of the 888 that few telephones have).
Thanks to this processor, and 8GB of RAM, the cellphone felt fairly highly effective to make use of once we had been scrolling via menus or apps. We didn’t check any video games on the cellphone – we had been too busy folding it and unfolding it advert nauseum – however now we have used loads of different Snapdragon 888 telephones, so it’ll probably be a fairly highly effective system.
The software program is Samsung’s OneUI, a fork of Android with a few of the firm’s apps thrown in – like most Android reskins, what you make of it, and the accompanying bloatware, is basically down to non-public style.
Early verdict
Don’t order the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 anticipating a vastly totally different cellphone to the authentic Z Flip – it has the similar dimensions, cameras, battery and software program. And after testing it totally, we're not satisfied we would half methods with numerous cash for it - the points with the type issue lurk round the Z Flip 3 like a darkish cloud.
There are, nonetheless, a few enhancements that may enchantment to those that skipped the authentic Flip however had been nonetheless tempted by it. The chipset is best, you’re getting a bigger outer show, and the interior display has a sooner refresh fee.
But it is likely to be the value that finally wins you over – whereas this cellphone continues to be super-expensive, it’s not as super-expensive as its predecessor, and we’re hoping this value drop is a signal of issues to return in the foldable cellphone house.
