One minute review
The Oppo Reno 6 Pro is its flagship smartphone for the latter half of 2021, coming solely 6 months after its predecessor. With a slight design and specification refresh, there may be not far more to the smartphone.
Amongst its competitors, its optics are stand-out. Especially in low-light conditions, the smartphone’s 50MP Sony IMX766 major digicam hardly ever fails to ship. Coupling that with the Oppo Reno 6 Pro’s AI-powered video capabilities and also you discover a package deal that eases social media creation.
However, efficiency will not be all the time ideally suited. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G chip on-board is a succesful one nevertheless its efficiency is inconsistent. Often, the smartphone suffers from pauses, and extra continuously than anticipated, it overheats. This has not been an issue on the Motorola Edge 20 Pro, a direct competitor to the Oppo Reno 6 Pro so seeing it here's a thriller.
Ultimately, the Oppo Reno 6 Pro is all a few good multimedia and digicam expertise. But its predecessor was already fairly succesful in these areas and there actually is not a lot right here to warrant a brand new model- particularly on the worth Oppo is asking for it.
Oppo Reno 6 Pro worth and availability
- Available now
- Costs AED 2,999 with pre-order bonuses
The Oppo Reno 6 Pro is the best finish providing in its 2021 Reno lineup, aiming to offer an unrestricted digicam and multimedia expertise in a stand-out design. However, its AED 2,999 price ticket is asking for lots, particularly on condition that it's a very incremental improve from its predecessor within the Oppo Reno 5 Pro from simply six months in the past. The solely noticeable variations are available in design and inside specs, with the latter surprisingly making the person expertise worse off.
Granted, at this price ticket, you get extra equipment like Oppo’s True Wireless W32 headphones and a cellular stand; nevertheless regardless of this, the Oppo Reno 6 Pro may be a tough promote.
It will not be distinctive sufficient to tempt present Oppo Reno 5 Pro customers to improve particularly with out an official change program and with competitors just like the Motorola Edge 20 Pro offering comparable specs at a less expensive worth level, the one method the Oppo Reno 6 Pro might exceed expectations is that if Oppo begins to supply bigger reductions or stronger incentives to purchase the smartphone within the subsequent couple of months.
Design
- Thinner and lighter than most smartphones
- Premium Oppo ‘Reno Glow’ textured end
- No official IP ranking
The premium construct and end of the Oppo Reno 6 Pro is clear proper from once you choose it up. It sports activities a steel body that encases a glass again that includes Oppo’s up to date ‘Reno Glow’ textured end. The microscopic texture provides grip to the again of the smartphone enabling higher grip and fingerprint resistance. However, in comparison with final yr’s end, we discover that this yr is extra about making the smartphone’s look look higher than its precise performance.
At 7.99mm and roughly 188g, the Oppo Reno 6 Pro can be a really manageable smartphone in a single hand. Compared to its competitors, it's barely narrower permitting even folks with smaller fingers to achieve the nook of the system simply. Buttons are snug and premium to press, with the ability button on the precise edge and the quantity rocker on the left.
There aren't any different surprises so far as different {hardware} components are involved. The rear digicam unit bulges out a bit making for a wobbly affair on a flat floor whereas the underside fringe of the smartphone homes the twin nano-SIM tray, the Type-C USB port for charging, the first microphone and one a part of the sturdy stereo speaker expertise. On the highest edge, you simply discover a secondary noise cancelling microphone and no extras like a 3.5mm headphone jack or an IR blaster.
With the Oppo Reno 6 Pro boasting an AMOLED panel, the fingerprint scanner additionally sits inside the show. It is straightforward to achieve, quick and dependable so we've no complaints right here. And whereas this could be the proper design for a smartphone from Oppo, a notable omission is IP water and dirt resistance. The rubber seals across the twin nano-SIM tray will present a point of resistance however Oppo doesn't formally state this. For a smartphone at its given worth, this omission is sort of a giant one and naturally makes you a bit apprehensive when utilizing the smartphone in dusty situations or close to a water supply.
Display
- Vibrant, vivid and immersive display
- Curved design
- OLED colours with a 90Hz refresh charge
The Oppo Reno 6 Pro packs a 20:9 6.5-inch AMOLED show with a 1,080 x 2,400 decision, a 180Hz contact sampling charge and a 90Hz refresh charge. Its deep colours and powerful distinction ranges are inherent properties of an OLED panel which make multimedia consumption an absolute pleasure. We used it to stream the brand new season of Money Heist and particulars, particularly in darker areas of scenes have been extraordinarily nicely portrayed due to HDR10+ certification. It additionally helps that the panel boasts as much as a 1,100 nit peak brightness which is nice for utilization in sunny situations.
Oppo gives a wide selection of choices in the case of tweaking show preferences to your wants. For instance, its ‘Vivid’ mode fulfils the DCI-P3 coloration gamut which is what we caught to, nevertheless you do get a ‘Gentle’ mode with sRGB colours. The latter makes for barely duller wanting colours in comparison with the show’s default coloration mode which will not be everybody’s cup of tea. Moreover, you may as well regulate the display coloration temperature of the show though we caught to Oppo’s default tuning.
The show additionally has a proprietary video coloration enhancer mode known as the ‘O1 Ultra Vision Engine’. Using this, common SDR content material is transformed to HDR for a greater visible expertise. However, we discovered its impact to be overpowering which generally resulted in saturated colours. While this was to not our desire, some folks could take pleasure in this additional pop to visuals particularly if they're watching content material involving a big variation in coloration.

Given the 90Hz refresh charge of the AMOLED show, it's unsurprising to see that content material flows nicely on the Oppo Reno 6 Pro. Whether it's animations or scrolling via components, you'll not see uneven movement. But one thing it's possible you'll expertise is unresponsiveness. which we are going to get to in a later part, however right here, we're referring to unresponsiveness as a result of curvature of the show. There is little question that the 3D curve provides customers a extra immersive expertise nevertheless, it's at a price. At occasions we discovered that the show not responding because of our palms touching the facet.
Camera
- Capable major digicam sensor
- Stellar low-light efficiency
- Selfie digicam leaves lots to be desired
The Oppo Reno 6 Pro has an AI-powered quad-camera setup. Its major digicam is a 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor assisted by a 16MP ultra-wide-angle digicam, a 13MP telephoto lens and a further 2MP macro sensor.
Right off the bat, the principle digicam takes some good pictures with wonderful element in good mild. However, one factor you will want to bear in mind is the digicam sensor’s tendency to over-saturate colours. Especially with greens, blues and reds, the sensor tries to sway coloration accuracy in an effort to make them extra interesting by way of the added vibrancy.
To be sincere although, this isn't a giant deal. Often, a number of touches on Snapseed or Adobe Photoshop after the picture has been taken ought to handle colours to a big extent. And it is because the core picture the sensor takes is great. Even in the case of dynamic vary processing and spotlight retention, there aren't any points that stick out notably.
But as quickly as you begin utilizing the opposite lenses, a significant downside of the digicam system comes into play. Color calibration between the huge, ultra-wide and telephoto lenses will not be constant, which is pure given the completely different {hardware} on-board. However, this weighs down on the whole digicam expertise. While the principle digicam goes for naturally cooler colours, the ultra-wide-angle digicam makes them even cooler, nearly including a hue of blue throughout the picture. Contrastingly, the telephoto lens favors hotter tones.
As for precise element, the ultra-wide-angle digicam exhibits fairly a noticeable drop-off. The sharpness and clear element from the principle digicam is changed by subdued colours and softer element. We aren't saying the ultra-wide-angle digicam is unusable nevertheless we anticipated a bit higher. Moreover, there may be additionally a touch distortion in pictures which is extra evident when taking footage of bridges or roads. As you get nearer to a topic with the ultra-wide-angle lens, distortion on the perimeters turns into extra pronounced.
Moving to the telephoto lens, it provides you a good bit of room to play with. Compared to the principle digicam, 2x optical zoom makes for little to no loss intimately. So, if you end up farther from a topic, this could have the ability to deal with issues simply superb. However, past this zoom restrict, element loss turns into extra evident. The digicam setup sports activities 5x hybrid zoom nevertheless it isn't the identical as 5x optical zoom. Detail is significantly lowered with softer edges. Pictures at this zoom vary are nonetheless not unusable for social media however in the event you intend on printing them or displaying them, the extent of element right here won't be satisfactory.
Finally, you discover a 2MP macro digicam on Oppo Reno 6 Pro. With sufficient lighting, the macro digicam can provide you some passable outcomes. But fairly frankly, it isn't one thing we're an enormous fan of. With the significantly better 16MP ultra-wide-angle digicam, Oppo might have simply carried out a macro perform by way of that lens. This would have led to significantly better element in macro pictures however alas, this isn't the route Oppo has gone.
While this quad-camera mixture works nicely in good lighting situations, in decrease mild, the stand-out lens to make use of is the principle 50MP sensor. We discovered that it manages indoor colours and lighting nicely. But switching lenses right here results in noise particularly within the darkest areas of the scene. Oppo does bundle an evening mode together with all of the lenses of the smartphone, however we discovered it really works greatest utilizing the principle digicam. Some of the images the sensor captured have been genuinely astonishing and having shared them on social media, lots of people requested whether or not they have been captured on a DSLR-camera.
We suppose the prowess of the Oppo Reno 6 Pro is low-light efficiency. Not simply with photographs, but additionally with video seize. The digicam unit can seize as much as 4K 60fps video footage that is still fairly secure when strolling briskly. In a automobile, the extent of stabilization from the digicam lenses diminishes and that's the place you should utilize Oppo’s ‘Ultra Stable’ mode. While recordings are capped at 1080p 60fps right here, it does offer you extra flexibility when shifting round.
Likewise, for video in tougher conditions, Oppo bundles an ‘AI Highlight Video’ mode. This leverages the digicam’s AI capabilities to make use of algorithms like ‘Live HDR’ or ‘Ultra Night Mode’. Using these, dynamic vary in a scene with a sundown is best preserved and particulars at night time are extra pronounced. But in utilizing this mode, we felt the Oppo Reno 6 Pro excessively brightens up colours through the night time. It makes them look irregular given the mode raises ISO ranges which naturally additionally means extra noise within the footage being captured.
To spherical up on the digicam expertise, you discover a 32MP punch-hole model selfie digicam. While its element and dynamic vary retention is sweet, we aren't a fan of it simply due to how Oppo handles processing. It tends to artificially brighten up each pictures and movies making for unnatural wanting colours. While there's a marketplace for this look, it isn't one thing that we like in our selfies.
Software and efficiency
- Oppo’s Color OS 11.3 is basically unobtrusive
- Inconsistent efficiency
- Questionable thermal administration
A big motive to improve to the Oppo Reno 6 Pro over its predecessor is the processing energy on the smartphone. It options the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G chip alongside 12GB of RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. While its storage configuration can't be expanded, its RAM can by way of Oppo’s ‘RAM expansion’ characteristic.

Using this, it is possible for you to so as to add both 3GB, 5GB or 7GB of additional RAM on the smartphone. We really feel with 12GB already on-board, it is a bit overkill nevertheless for very demanding customers, it may be price it. We have additionally seen some advantages of this characteristic, particularly when the smartphone is ready to maintain quite a lot of functions opened days in the past in reminiscence.
But efficiency with the Oppo Reno 6 Pro is infuriating. On the one hand, RAM is managed nicely. But it appears that evidently the processor on-board will not be in a position to sustain with the utilization. For instance, we frequently discovered the smartphone to pause when looking between functions. Using Chrome or Twitter, the functions remained unresponsive with the one technique to repair this being a power shut. Moreover, it's throughout these pauses that the Oppo Reno 6 Pro overheats.
Towards the central area of the smartphone in addition to close to the digicam housing, the smartphone turns into abnormally scorching to the touch. If you proceed to make use of it, it stays that method. We discovered that one certain shot technique to repair this was to maintain the cellphone idle for 10-Quarter-hour and clear all background functions.
Naturally, the overheating difficulty additionally popped up when gaming. When you initially boot up a recreation like PUBG: Mobile or Asphalt 9, efficiency is sweet. But over time, the smartphone heats up resulting in uneven and inconsistent frames when there's a lot happening within the recreation. We are notably stunned by this given Oppo’s intensive thermal options on the smartphone. It claims to have a multi-cooling system with an ultra-large vapor chamber though we have been unable to see its real-world advantages.
We know that software program on a smartphone makes up the whole person expertise nevertheless within the Oppo Reno 6 Pro’s case, we're assured that it isn't software program that's inflicting these points, solely as a result of the smartphone’s predecessor didn't give us any of those points.
On-board, the Oppo Reno 6 Pro runs Color OS 11.3 on high of Android 11. Over the years, Oppo’s pores and skin has change into much less obtrusive, and it exhibits. The little bloatware that comes pre-installed with the smartphone could be uninstalled and among the extra options the pores and skin offers are wonderful. We love the native video editor within the gallery, the power to customise the feel and appear of the smartphone by way of themes and the good sidebar for fast entry to instruments like display recording or translating components on display.
Thus far, we've obtained two software program updates on our Oppo Reno 6 Pro, going as much as the August 2021 Android safety patch. And over each updates, we but to see fixes for the inconsistent efficiency we've confronted. Hopefully, within the subsequent updates to come back, Oppo addresses these points if they're certainly attributable to a software program optimization difficulty.
Battery life
- 4,500mAh battery capability
- Below-average battery backup
- 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charging will get you a full cost in 29 minutes
- No wi-fi charging
The 4,500mAh battery on the Oppo Reno 6 Pro could be thought-about above common in dimension given the shape issue of the smartphone. But its battery efficiency will not be nice.
On a typical day that begins at round 7:30AM, we discovered the Oppo Reno 6 Pro to be at 34% at 3:00PM. By round 5:00PM, this dipped to 14%. Given this efficiency, it's tough to get via an extended day on a single cost on the Oppo Reno 6 Pro. Translating this to screen-on occasions, the smartphone averaged between 5.5-7 hours. Comparing this to a competing smartphone just like the Motorola Edge 20 Pro, the common screen-on time is about 30% much less.
We suppose this battery life could be attributed to the best way the smartphone performs. With it repeatedly heating up, battery drain turns into quicker. And we sincerely hope Oppo seems to rectify this by way of a software program replace if attainable as a result of it impacts not simply efficiency but additionally battery life.
The benefit of the battery on the Oppo Reno 6 Pro although is battery charging. A 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charging brick and cable is bundled with the smartphone that absolutely prices it in simply 29 minutes. The comfort of having the ability to get to 50% in round 10-Quarter-hour considerably makes up for the disappointing battery life.
Where we won't excuse Oppo is with the shortage of wi-fi charging contemplating the pricing of this cellphone.
