JBL Tour One Wireless review

One-minute review

Over-ear headphones have two jobs: match comfortably and play audio properly sufficient to actually benefit from the content material. Sprinkled inside these primary tenets are extra options which might be supposed to boost the expertise. You might simply describe any over-ear pair that approach, however the JBL Tour One Wireless are an fascinating case as a result of they’re designed to cater to a bigger viewers.

JBL will be hit and miss on its audio merchandise, and the identical might be stated concerning the Tour One: the sound, whereas good, isn’t distinctive, and whereas the performance is ok, we’re left pondering these might have hit the next notice.

There is potential for JBL to launch enhancements by the use of a firmware replace by way of the app, and had already finished so as soon as whereas we examined them. If the corporate retains doing that, it could have sufficient to push them up the ladder as harder rivals. For now, nevertheless, we would nonetheless advocate a pair of cans from Sony or Bose if you'd like top-tier noise cancellation.

Price and launch date

The JBL Tour One have been launched in May 2021 and are available at $300 / £279 (round AU$450). The problem is that ballpark worth has loads of different headphones that may compete or play higher, and that’s the place issues get difficult right here.

For starters, that is just a bit bit much less cash than the stellar Sony WH-1000XM4, what we contemplate to be the perfect noise-cancelling headphones available on the market, and the Bose QuietComfort 35 II, which is available in an in depth second. Because ANC is not the JBL Tour One's sturdy go well with, each really feel like higher values regardless of their increased worth.

Design

The Tour One Wireless don’t have any particular design remedies to face out in a crowded subject. Look at them straight on they usually resemble so many others. Gaze at them from the aspect and the impartial look additionally doesn’t significantly stand out. The gunmetal and black coloration scheme is previous hat by now, nevertheless it nonetheless works, so these will match proper in when you’re not searching for something too conspicuous.

The fake leather-based headband is delicate sufficient to sink in with out feeling prefer it pinches after some time, whereas the earcups have little wiggle room as soon as you place them on. That’s nice for stability, however maybe not a lot if you'd like your ears to breathe a little bit. JBL might have finished this by design to raised lure within the bass and keep away from leakage that might in any other case dilute it.

Whatever the case, the match could also be divisive as a result of, in contrast to the headscarf, you've gotten little recourse to regulate the earcups. They do swivel, which helps contour to the form in case your head and ears, however when you don’t just like the thinner padding or how they sit, there’s not a lot you are able to do about it. Plus, they do lure in warmth, although we didn’t discover it to be stifling sufficient to take them off for a breather all that usually.

JBL did attempt to allocate controls in a symmetrical approach. The proper earpiece has an influence swap that additionally doubles because the Bluetooth pairing button. Volume controls sit close by, together with a 2.5mm headphone jack while you wish to use the Tour One Wireless in a wired kind. The USB-C charging port is on the left cup, together with a solitary button to set off your native voice assistant.

Interestingly, the precise earcup’s total outer floor is touch-sensitive, housing quite a few controls. Play or pause with a easy faucet, or double faucet to skip a observe. Unfortunately, there’s no approach to repeat one. We tried triple tapping and bought nothing. Tap and maintain and you may cycle by way of energetic noise cancellation (ANC) and Ambient Aware. JBL’s Headphones app does supply some methods to customise these controls, like allocating voice assistants — Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri or Bixby — to the panel as a substitute. In flip, you possibly can apply the Ambient Aware mode to the button on the left earcup as properly.

While we didn’t like not with the ability to repeat a observe, we did recognize how efficient the general controls have been. We not often made a incorrect transfer, and that’s not at all times the case with each pair of over-ear headphones.

Features

JBL features a very good case to go together with the Tour One Wireless, full with pouches for the cables that include them. To carry and transport these felt like a pleasure based mostly on how snugly all the pieces match inside.

It was simple sufficient to pair the Tour One Wireless, particularly with Pixel smartphones as a result of JBL helps Google’s quick pairing protocols. We had already downloaded the JBL Headphones app from earlier opinions, so have been capable of additionally get that connection going briefly order.

Within the app is a set of choices that do come in useful. We favored the auto play/pause when eradicating or placing the Tour One on, in addition to an alarm in case we ever felt like taking a nap whereas listening to music or spoken phrase content material. And then there’s the equalizer, which is important to tinker with due to the way in which these headphones sound.

By default, they play with a balanced, although subdued, sound profile. The EQ has a couple of presets, together with one for bass, however we went forward and created our personal to see what we might get.

Performance

We tried the Tour One Wireless in various circumstances and conditions to gauge their sound. For essentially the most half, we left ANC on, particularly as a result of JBL designed it to be considerably adaptive, but in addition stored Ambient Aware on typically to see how properly that function labored.

The gist is that the Tour One Wireless are regular sufficient to not go over any proverbial audio cliff, however these guardrails additionally pressure you to be extra aggressive with the EQ. For instance, at common ranges, these headphones really feel restrained. Unleash the bass, they usually punch by way of with extra of a thump that makes them come alive. We seen that instantly when taking part in Friend by KastomariN and the stay model of Maxwell’s Ascension. With present hip hop and EDM tracks, you're feeling the rumble much more. On the flip aspect, play rock or jazz and the treble can rip by way of a observe with verve, like Jimi Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower. Thing is, the treble can generally really feel piercing, and that’s the place the EQ may also help stage off the worst excesses of the highs within the audio spectrum. It helps, however can’t at all times stave off the harsher parts, particularly while you discover that the headphones deal with quieter parts of a tune the identical approach they do the louder ones.

We additionally needed to contemplate how the noise options utilized. JBL’s True Adaptive NC regulates ANC by elevating or reducing the impact based mostly on what’s taking place round you. The downside with it's that it makes an audible distinction, so when you’re strolling down the road, it’s adjusting so much to compensate for the variances in each high and low frequencies. We opted to maintain ANC at Everyday mode for a extra constant method.

Ambient Aware was a blended bag, not as a result of we couldn’t hear our environment, however as a result of they have been generally muddled. The mode did higher with others’ voices than with varied sounds, making the mode one thing to make use of when vital, moderately than a dependable function to belief.

We discovered telephone calls have been typically okay, significantly when ANC was on to dam out different sounds. Despite that, we seen significantly better ends in quieter settings, so these might not be the perfect for conversations when issues are loud round you.

Battery life

JBL charges the Tour One Wireless at as much as 24 hours per cost at the usual default quantity. We truly hit that quantity fairly simply going a notch above that stage, hitting nearer to 28-30 hours. We additionally took benefit of the auto-off setting to have them flip off after quarter-hour after we left them idle.

Battery life is strong throughout wired playback, together with with recreation consoles utilizing the TRS cable. It’s simply that you just lose out on the microphones, since solely audio passes by way of, which means you gained’t be capable of talk in multiplayer video games.
