One-minute review

Can the Y-Brush actually clear your tooth in simply 10 seconds? In our expertise, the reply is sure... principally.

It's exhausting to disclaim the novelty of an electrical toothbrush that guarantees to scrub all of your tooth directly, giving each floor extra consideration than a standard brush in 1/120 of the time. However, we weren't awed by the efficiency.

We would not count on any toothbrush to remove the necessity for floss or interdental brushes, however in our checks utilizing a disclosing pill, we discovered that the Y-Brush left noticeably extra deposits between our tooth than a normal electrical toothbrush. We subsequently wanted to spend just a little longer wielding the floss after brushing, which ate into the time we would saved. You cannot brush your tongue with the Y-Brush both, so you will want to make use of a tongue scraper to complete the job.

Mastering the Y-Brush approach takes just a little time – you have to chew on the bristles whereas transferring the comb backward and forward – however even with a number of weeks of follow we simply could not get the identical clear as we may from an everyday toothbrush.

It was more practical than we would anticipated, and fairly enjoyable to make use of, however the additional work required to tidy issues up afterwards meant we did not save an enormous period of time in comparison with our common routine.

Y-Brush worth and launch date

The Y-Brush was crowdfunded on Kickstarter in 2018, and its maker (French firm Fasteesh) started transport brushes to backers in 2020. It went on basic sale later that yr, and will be purchased immediately from Fasteesh within the US, Canada, UK, EU, and Australia.

The Y-Brush starter pack prices £106.99 (about $150 / AU$200), and contains the deal with, plus a brush head and charging cable. Accessories (together with additional heads, toothpaste applicators and chewable toothpaste tabs) will be purchased individually.

That's fairly a steep worth, significantly for an electrical toothbrush with out Bluetooth. For context, our top-rated electrical toothbrush, the Oral-B iO Series 9, is presently obtainable for $199 / £245 / AU$400, and affords real-time location detection, customized brushing recommendation, and near-silent brushing.

Y-Brush design

The Y-Brush consists of a semicircular tray, much like a gumshield, which is lined with bristles to scrub the entrance, again, and biting surfaces of your tooth. It is not the one mouthguard-style toothbrush obtainable, however most others use silicone 'bristles' to get the cleansing completed.

The Y-Brush makes use of extra standard nylon bristles, which its creator Fasteesh explains has been clinically confirmed to do a greater job eradicating plaque than different supplies. They're very comfortable, and we did not expertise any gum irritation.

There are solely two head sizes (one for youngsters and adults, and one for kids). People's mouths fluctuate massively in dimension and {shape}, however the heads are comprised of a versatile plastic that may be bent just a little to suit completely different sized arches, and Fasteesh has devised a manner of manipulating the comb throughout cleansing that helps attain across the complete mouth.

This head slots right into a wedge-shaped deal with, which is supplied with a single massive button, surrounded by an LED ring that signifies the ability standing, cost degree, and chosen mode.

There's a comfortable silicone adapter that matches over the tip of your toothbrush tube, permitting it to dispense a skinny line of paste that can sit neatly in between the comb head's bristles. We respect that Fasteesh does not power you to make use of its personal proprietary toothpastes with a particular dispenser, although it is price taking into consideration that it really works finest with a comparatively skinny paste.

Our review equipment additionally included a wedge-shaped holder that permits the comb head to empty and dry after you have given it a radical rinse. It's not significantly engaging to have in your toilet counter (significantly as a result of the comb head is an odd off-white coloration), and takes up much more house than most electrical toothbrush charging bases.

Our equipment got here with a journey case as nicely, which is just a little bigger than these for many electrical toothbrushes, however is solidly constructed and has sufficient house inside for the draining stand, a spare head, and even a mini tube of paste.

Y-Brush efficiency

Requires chewing and sliding approach
May require extra time flossing
Can't clear tongue

To use the Y-Brush, you first have to cost it by way of the micro-USB port within the facet of the deal with. It's a disgrace that there isn't any adapter for charging it by way of a rest room shaver socket, however this solely must be completed roughly each six months (much less brushing time means much less energy consumption) so it isn't a lot of a difficulty.

Once that is completed, push the top onto the deal with and fix the particular silicone nozzle to your toothpaste tube (it isn't appropriate for a pump-style container). Rinse the comb head below the faucet, then squeeze a skinny line of paste all alongside the bristles.

Now chunk down gently on the comb along with your higher tooth and also you're prepared to start. Press the ability button for one second to show it on, and press it once more briefly to alter depth settings. When the vibration tops, flip the comb over so the bristles sit over your decrease arch and press the button as soon as extra.

At the highest setting, the Y-Brush does certainly take simply 10 seconds to scrub your complete mouth. However, Fasteesh advises beginning with probably the most mild possibility for the primary few days, step by step transferring up as you get used to it.

When utilizing the comb, it quickly turns into clear why; reasonably than merely chomping down and ready for the bristles to do their work, you have to chew vigorously whereas transferring the comb side-to-side. It's an uncommon movement, and you have to do it rapidly. The decrease depth settings offer you just a little longer (15 and 10 seconds for every arch, respectively), so you may get used to the motion earlier than graduating to the quickest setting.

The outcomes have been higher than we would anticipated (it felt very unusual to complete brushing after such a short while), however inferior to these we would get with a normal electrical toothbrush. Using a disclosing pill, we discovered the Y-Brush cleaned flat surfaces nicely, however left extra deposits between tooth and across the gums than we would usually count on.

We'd all the time count on to wish interdental brushes and/or floss after cleansing our tooth, however with the Y-Brush we would have liked to spend longer tidying issues up, which ate into the time we would saved with the additional fast brushing.

Y-Brush and accessories in carry case

The elective carry case makes the Y-Brush handy for travelling (Image credit score: Future)

We may positively see it being helpful for freshening up on the transfer, although. The six-month battery life and carry case imply you'll be able to slip it right into a bag and use it to provide your tooth a (very) fast brush after lunch, or earlier than an occasion.

The Y-Brush might also be helpful for folks with restricted motion of their palms, which might make manoeuvring a normal toothbrush tough, however for our personal on a regular basis cleansing we would favor to stay with a standard design – significantly contemplating how a lot it prices.

At the time of writing, you'll be able to decide up the versatile Oral-B Genius X good toothbrush for a similar worth, which could take a full two minutes for an entire clear, however has place detection that will help you attain each a part of your mouth, a stress sensor to assist keep away from harm to gums and tooth enamel, and a smartphone app that helps you enhance your brushing approach.

Buy it if

The Y-Brush takes quite a bit much less dexterity than an everyday handbook or electrical toothbrush, and in the event you wrestle to brush completely then it could be price asking your dentist whether or not it is a appropriate possibility.

You wish to clean up on the transfer
The elective carry case and six-month battery life make the Y-Brush a superb possibility for giving your tooth a spruce up after meals, and the short brush cycle means you will not maintain folks ready.

Don't purchase it if

You have good brushing approach
If you are already deft with a handbook or electrical toothbrush, the Y-Brush is not going to provide higher outcomes than you are getting now.
