Balram is no saint either. He thinks nothing of mimicking his masters to get ahead in life. He takes recourse to slimy means to have the number one driver fired. He bribes the police. He hollers at an old woman who asks him for money to buy food. He stops at nothing to wriggle out of a corner when pushed to the wall.

Adarsh Gourav wasn’t a household name when this movie was announced but, we guess that’s
about to change. The actor has a penchant for intricate details and you can tell: acing that colloquial
North Indian accent, mannerisms of a troubled persona and that of a man who was once innocent
and immune to the darkness of the world. Although he is consistently inconsistent as Balram – you
know, coming off as a loony who devices deathly plans through loud monologues, and also goes out
to his master’s mansion to apply oil on his hair carefully masking his hideous plans

It’s a star-making performance by newcomer Adarsh Gourav, who not only manages to grab the proverbial bull by the horns, but also reins it in. He’s an Angry Young Man for post-Modi India, much like what Amitabh Bachchan was for the Emergency generation — an embodiment of rage, restlessness and rebellion directed at the establishment.

Adarsh Gourav is, for the most part, convincing as the conflicted, perennially angry Balram, but his exaggerated accent in the opening lines of his narration is a blatant bow to the Hollywood notion of how Indians speak English – either he forgets it or intentionally tones it down as the narrative progresses.
