One-minute review
On the cusp of a brand new period in TV expertise, Samsung's Mini LED-sporting QN900A Neo QLED 8K TV presents gorgeous image high quality, distinctive colour and brightness, terrific sound and excellent blacks – all in a package deal that is unmatched when it comes to design.
If you are unfamiliar, Samsung's 'Quantum' Mini LEDs are 1/fortieth the thickness of an everyday light-emitting diode, which means hundreds of smaller LEDs will be packed collectively in a a lot tighter trend, permitting for a lot extra correct dimming zones and black ranges which can be virtually indistinguishable from an OLED to this reviewer's eyes.
Of course, that does not imply Samsung's Neo QLED is to in a position to produce lights and colours on the particular person pixel-level like an OLED TV can, solely that it does a comparable job on the subject of distinction.
Outside of its new lighting expertise, the QN900A excels when it comes to image high quality, with an astonishing 8K decision show that does a superb job of upscaling 1080p and 4K content material due to the AI-based 'Neo Quantum Processor 8K'.
Gamers are certain to like the QN900A, due to quite a few next-gen prepared options, together with help for 4K/120fps or 8K/60fps gameplay through HDMI 2.1, Game Motion Plus and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro.
It most likely goes with out saying that the QN900A's pricing will show prohibitively costly for most individuals. However, these of you with cash to spend who're searching for the present benchmark in top-end televisions will discover little or no to fault with Samsung's QN900A Neo QLED 8K TV.

Design
- Gorgeous bezel-free design
- Minimal stand with attachable One Connect field

When seen for the primary time, it is onerous to not gush over the QN900A's stark minimalism, which goals to make every thing however the content material you are watching soften away from view.

The very first thing you may discover (or possibly not discover) is the TV's almost non-existent bezel, which has been decreased to lower than a millimeter (0.9.mm) – an achievement made attainable by a brand new and unique matrixing expertise that is stated to shrink the area between the place the pixels on the fringe of the show finish and the place the bezel begins.
The subsequent factor you may most likely marvel is the place the QN900A's audio system are, as they are not seen from front-on. In reality, the TV's speaker grilles will be discovered alongside its left and proper edges, housing an 80W 6.2.2 channel system (that is ten audio system in complete).
Continuing the development of aesthetically pleasing design components is the QN900A's stand, which is slim, flat and centered, which means you will not want an particularly large floor to position the TV on.
Like all of Samsung's premium televisions for the previous couple of years, the QN900A goals to cut back cable muddle by having a separate One Connect field that homes all however one of many TV's ports.
This continues to be a handy different to awkwardly plugging a number of cables into the again of the TV itself (particularly when you plan to wall-mount the unit), and the QN900A presents the added bonus of with the ability to connect the One Connect field on to the again of the stand if you do not have hiding spot for it.
HDMI 2.1 is supported throughout all 4 of the TV's HDMI ports, with one additionally providing eARC help, and there is additionally 3x USB 2.0 ports, 1x ethernet port, 1x optical output and an RF antenna enter.
If there's one design space we are able to fault, it is that the QN900A's display screen will be fairly reflective in well-lit rooms. Though the TV boasts an anti-reflection layer, we discovered it almost unimaginable to take an image of the set's black ranges with out the sunshine from a close-by window reflecting again at us.
Aside from this, Samsung's QN900A Neo QLED 8K is a tv that is class-leading on the subject of design. With bezels which have been decreased to the purpose of almost non-existent, speaker grills which can be solely seen from the aspect, and a minimalist stand that additionally gives extra performance, the QN900A's design is what each TV producer ought to aspire to.
Smart TV (Tizen OS) and distant
- Fast and acquainted Tizen-based working system
- Most well-liked apps available
- Remote not wants batteries
If you have owned or used a Samsung TV in the previous couple of years, you may know kind of what to anticipate from the QN900A's good Tizen-based OS.
A press of the house button in your distant will see your favourite apps and sources pop up from the underside fringe of the show in a horiztonal line.
Cycling by way of these will see extra info spring up above the preliminary row of apps. For occasion, hovering over a streaming service like Netflix will current you with a view of your not too long ago seen exhibits and films, permitting you proceed instantly from your own home display screen.
All the most well-liked apps and providers are current and accounted for on Samsung's OS, and there is a devoted Apps tile with additional app strategies which you'll be able to set up.
Additionally, the QN900A's distant presents a few devoted buttons that let you rapidly launch Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
In phrases of design, the Neo QLED 8K's distant is sort of much like what Samsung's been providing with its different TVs over the previous couple of years, with one main distinction – the brand new distant not wants batteries, with a brand new panel on its rear that is in a position to take up mild – each pure and synthetic – to maintain itself charged up.
The option to ditch batteries isn't solely nice for the atmosphere, it is also made the distant itself extremely mild within the hand. That stated, you'll have to get used to putting the distant face down whenever you've completed utilizing it.
Performance
- Excellent readability and colour
- Brightness that far exceeds what OLEDs are able to
- OLED-like distinction with not one of the drawbacks
As we talked about earlier, Samsung Neo QLED televisions sport LEDs which have been decreased to 1/fortieth of their conventional dimension, permitting for an enormous enhance to each brightness and black ranges.

As the LEDs are far smaller, they're in a position to obtain much more precision and fewer blooming, so the act of seeing brilliant areas of the display screen unnaturally bleed over into darker spots ought to be tremendously decreased or not evident in any respect.
We kicked issues off by watching the gorgeous documentary series Our Planet on Netflix. Immediately, we have been handled to a view of Earth from the moon, with a large expanse of tiny, glittering stars surrounded by the deep blackness of area. That we might make out these particular person specs with out mild bleeding round them was greater than spectacular for a non-OLED show.
Skipping ahead a bit, we discovered ourselves viewing a lush, inexperienced rainforest towards a backdrop of picturesque mountains. The element right here was off the charts, with an intense readability that appeared sensational given its 4K supply, proving that there is not any actual hurry for native 8K content material to reach.
The subsequent factor we booted up was Robert Rodriguez's visually spectacular epic Alita: Battle Angel in Ultra HD. Once once more, we have been impressed by how sharp and clear the movie appeared on the QN900A, providing an unbelievable quantity of element, wealthy colours and deep blacks.
It's price mentioning that we did discover some cases of sunshine bleed in a single scene close to the start of the movie, through which Alita is wanting over her new mechanical physique.
In the picture beneath, you may see some mild bleeding from her brilliant chest plates into the black bar on the backside of the display screen. Of course, we did not actually discover this elsewhere, and it have to be stated that the highlights on this scene are particularly brilliant. Still, it does present that even with Mini LEDs that mild bleeding can nonetheless happen.
One of the massive promoting factors of any 8K TV is how effectively it handles upscaling. and fortunately the QN900A does an important job of constructing content material look crystal-clear with none synthetic smoothing. Take the above picture of Alita for example – it is clear and sharp, but you'll be able to nonetheless make out its fantastic, film-like grain.
Taking benefit of Samsung's Multi-Intelligence AI upscaling, the QN900A was persistently in a position to produce pictures that appeared higher than their supply. We're not saying that it made any 4K content material appear like native 8K, nevertheless it did make it seem higher than Ultra HD when seen up shut.
On 8K TVs, pixels are a lot nearer collectively, and due to this fact far more troublesome to individually make out than on 4K units. In our checks, we watched content material from a wide range of sources and whereas there's not loads that may be carried out with older customary definition content material nowadays, we have been glad to see that it did not look particularly stretched out or fuzzy on this huge 8K display screen.
Modern 1080p content material, nonetheless, appeared glorious. Taking into consideration that one FHD pixel is stretched throughout 16 pixels on an 8K TV, Samsung's AI-powered Neo Quantum Processor 8K chip is important to sew collectively these extra pixels in a manner that is clear and pure wanting, with none aliasing or fuzziness to talk of.
While we weren't in a position to take a look at any 4K/120Hz content material throughout our review interval, we did check out quite a few 8K/60fps take a look at movies and located the QN900A delivered persistently clean movement with nary a hiccup to talk of (outdoors of a few cases the place our Wi-Fi wasn't in a position to sustain).
One extra space that Samsung has made progress with is Wi-Fi connectivity. While final yr's flagship fashions solely shipped with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi help, Samsung has added 5GHz help to this years fashions for a greater streaming of 4K content material. It's nonetheless not good although and we did discover the occasional stutter when streaming very excessive bitrate content material.
Audio
- Surprisingly nice built-in audio
- Object-tracking impact good, if not fairly 3D
- Soundbar nonetheless one of the simplest ways to attain actually immersive sound
Although we have been supplied with Samsung's new Q950A soundbar for the needs of our review, we selected to restrict our utilization of it in an effort to get a greater understanding of the Neo QLED's built-in sound providing.

As mentioned earlier, the QN900A's audio system have been built-in into the left and proper sides of the TV. You will not discover audio shouting out of the again of this tv, however Samsung's much-touted Object Tracking Sound Pro function does job of bringing depth to no matter you occur to be watching, making it straightforward to trace noises transferring from left to proper.
While there was some dimensionality to be discovered right here, the telly's built-in audio system could not hope to match an actual Dolby Atmos-capable soundbar or hi-fi setup on the subject of a offering a very convincing three-dimensional soundscape.
Despite this, Samsung's top-of-the-line Neo QLED 8K TV supplied much better audio efficiency than we have been anticipating, with dialogue coming by way of in a very clear and outstanding trend.

You very explicit about good black ranges
As good of a job as Samsung has carried out with the QN900A and Mini LED lighting, you will notice some mild bleed in very particular situations. OLED TVs do not have that challenge as a result of the pixels mild up as an alternative of any LEDs behind them.
