Despite being inspired by one or more thrillers that preceded it, Nail Polish has elements of its own that send the story home and make it a decent watch for crime film enthusiasts.

Sidharth Jaisingh (Arjun Rampal) pleads for the devil when tasked with defending a humble Veer Singh (Manav Kaul), who is suspected of sexually abusing and murdering migrant children. But the grim tone of this drama is set long before its set-up, when conveyed via the title role that nail polish is inspired by real events and involves missing children. This evokes empathy and interest in equal measures.

Now the state wants to clean up its track record and hires counsel Amit Kumar (Anand Tiwari) to ensure that Veer is charged with the crime. The rest of the story is about Sidharth and Amit fighting the case to a logical conclusion.

But this is only part of it. The Psycho angle comes in when Veer is beaten by prisoners while incarcerated. He appears to have suffered serious trauma after the incident, which gives rise to Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Veer becomes Charu Raina, a woman in her thirties. Honestly, you’re going to have to wait for this hook to come in as it’s reserved for the second half of the movie.

Heartfelt performances from Arjun, Anand and Rajit Kapur, who plays Judge Bhushan, initially prepared the courtroom scenes well for the big turn. Both Arjun and Anand give us different personalities from similar professions and we thoroughly enjoy their give and take.

The last half is reserved for Manav to shine. While he’s demure as Veer, and even inundates us with hints of his guilt or innocence, it’s hard to see the truth behind his piercing eyes. This makes us even more invested in the story. As for his other personality Charu, he is convincing and catches our attention at every moment. The rest of the film depends on good editing and honest stories.

In the final courtroom, Arjun, Anand and Rajit are tested with long takes and do not disappoint. They seem just as perplexed by the situation they are in as we are, and that increases the drama quotient.

Nail polish can be enjoyed for a variety of reasons, but mostly for its gentle greeting to the master of tension Alfred Hitchcock.
