UPDATE: we have spent a little bit of time testing the brand new characteristic and located some headphones appear to work higher than others – see 'How does it really carry out?' under for additional particulars. Our unique story continues under.
Nintendo has revealed its extremely standard Switch lineup of convertible gaming consoles are finally getting a characteristic that followers have been begging for since its launch in 2017 – Bluetooth audio help.
The shock announcement got here from Nintendo of America's Twitter account, stating {that a} firmware replace (model 13.0.0) that provides the characteristic is offered to download proper now.
Both the usual Nintendo Switch and the Switch Lite are supported, and presumably the upcoming Switch OLED as effectively – though there is no express affirmation of that but.
The newest #NintendoSwitch replace is now accessible, together with the power to pair Bluetooth gadgets for audio output. For extra info, together with restrictions on some options whereas utilizing Bluetooth Audio, please go to the help web page: https://t.co/vzAB6lZTDu pic.twitter.com/6J5xcDl5kUSeptember 15, 2021

The tweet additionally hints at 'restrictions on some options' whereas utilizing Bluetooth audio, and factors to a help web page for additional particulars.
These limitations embody an higher restrict of two wi-fi controllers being paired whereas Bluetooth audio is in use at anyone time, and just one Bluetooth audio machine can be paired at anyone time (though as much as 10 can be saved for fast pairing).
For players that use the Switch for multiplayer gaming, Bluetooth will not work throughout native wi-fi multiplayer video games, and Bluetooth microphones for communication aren't supported in any respect.
The course of for pairing is, in traditional Nintendo model, remarkably easy – a brand new menu merchandise titled 'Bluetooth Audio' seems within the Switch's settings menu, from which you merely have to hit 'add machine' and run by means of the motions to pair.
Bluetooth and lag
One final limitation listed in Nintendo's help web page mentions that you simply "may experience audio latency depending on your Bluetooth device". This has been one of many core points with utilizing Bluetooth for gaming previously, because the expertise is thought for producing a slight delay when delivering audio from one machine to a different.

As Bluetooth requirements have improved, that latency has been slowly getting lowered, and there are actually a wide range of intelligent tips that assist preserve the scale of transmitted info low (compression, for one) whereas bettering the aptitude of the connection itself, though it does not clear up the difficulty altogether.
While direct Bluetooth audio help is not essentially an ordinary characteristic for consoles – each the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 lack it, as an illustration – these programs have a tendency to supply low-latency alternate options, akin to devoted headsets or the power to plug headphones straight into the controller (each options the Switch additionally lacks).
How does it really carry out?
The crew at SociallyTrend have been testing out the brand new Bluetooth audio help on our Switch consoles (examined in handheld mode), and sadly it's not all peachy.
We discovered that the over-ear Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones sounded nice, whereas the Sony WF-1000XM4 true wi-fi earbuds had a persistent crackle and closely filtered audio sign.

An identical sample was discovered when evaluating the Beats Solo Pro with the Beats Studio Buds, with the previous over-ear models sounding strong but the true wi-fi buds providing flaky efficiency.
In each cases, the true wi-fi fashions really had newer variations of Bluetooth (5.2 in contrast with 5.0), so it may annoyingly be a difficulty with newer headphones. Alternatively, the difficulty may stem from the truth that the left and proper earpieces for true wi-fi earbuds are both paired collectively wirelessly, or every require a direct connection to the host machine.
If it's the latter, maybe the Switch's limitation of solely with the ability to hook up with a single Bluetooth audio machine implies that true wi-fi earbuds are merely not appropriate. We're positive that the state of affairs will turn out to be clearer as extra individuals attempt the characteristic, but we'll have to attend and see if Nintendo addresses this extra explicitly.
In all circumstances, the latency was quite comparable, with one thing within the realm of half a second lag between management enter and the related sound being delivered to our ears.
This degree of latency might be satisfactory for a lot of players and video games – we discovered it untroubling in Skyrim, as an illustration – but when making an attempt out the quick-paced rogue-lite Dead Cells, the delay within the timing made a few of the hairier moments particularly chaotic and disorientating.
