Joe Root made England strong, 263 runs for 3 wickets on day 1

In the 100th Test of captain Joe Root (unbeaten 128), the amazing feat of a century and his impressive partnership of 200 runs for the third wicket with Dominic Sibley (87) helped England against India on the first day of the first Test at MA Chindabaram Stadium here On Friday, he scored a strong score of 263 runs for three wickets.

The first day of the first Test was completely named after the record batting of England captain Joe Root. Root scored his third consecutive century, his fifth century against India and his 20th century overall. Root is at the crease with 197 runs in 197 balls with the help of 14 fours and a six. Sibley, who supported his captain well, was dismissed on the third ball of the last over of the day. Sibley played a brilliant innings of 87 runs off 286 balls with the help of 12 fours. Both of them put England in a very strong position for the third wicket with a tremendous partnership of 200 runs in 390 balls.

England won the toss and batted first, losing opener Rory Burns and Daniel Lawrence in the morning session. Burns and Sibley gave England a solid 63-run start but England then lost two batsmen on the same score. At this time it seemed that the Indian bowlers would put pressure on England but the in-form Root scored a third successive century, batting brilliantly in the remaining two seasons of the day.

India dominated the morning session but the pair of Root and Sibley dominated the second and third sessions of the day. He did not give any chance to the Indian bowlers. Indian captain Virat Kohli looked weak in terms of strategy and bowling balance. India also took a second new ball after completing 80 overs in the third session but it had no effect on both batsmen.

India got their first breakthrough in the first session of the morning just before lunch when they had Burns caught by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Shortly thereafter, Bumrah lbw new batsman Lawrence with an inside ball. This was Bumrah’s first Test and first wicket on Indian ground. He had earlier played 17 of his Tests on foreign soil. In the last over of the day, Jasprit Bumrah trapped Sibley and brought some relief to India.

India featured two fast bowlers Bumrah and Ishant Sharma and three spinners off-spinner Ashwin, left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem and part-time spinner Washington Sundar. Left arm spin all-rounder Akshar Patel crashed out of the first Test due to knee pain.

Nadeem, who was brought in his place, could not make much impact. The 31-year-old Nadeem, playing his second Test, conceded 69 runs in 20 overs and did not get any wickets. Sundar conceded 55 runs in 12 overs and was also left handed.
Ishant, who was out of Australia tour, returned to the Indian team from this series. He bowled with skimp but was unable to get any wickets for 27 runs in 15 overs. Bumrah took two wickets for 40 runs in 18.3 overs. Ashwin took one wicket for 68 runs in 24 overs.
