Effective Techniques To Help Your Preschooler Prepare For A Sibling

Many parents choose to have a second, (or third) child a few years after the first. This often means that the baby is due around the same time as your first child starts at a quality early learning Chatswood. In short, your child is going to have a huge amount of things changing around them.

It’s not unusual for them to feel the baby is pushing them out and this can cause resentment and other issues in the family. However, it doesn’t need to. As a parent, you need to be aware of the potential issues and help your child be ready, and even excited, about having a sibling.

Tell Them First

Most parents don’t like sharing the news until they have passed the ten-twelve week stage and the pregnancy is continuing normally. Traditionally, this means the most dangerous stage has passed.

Once you reach this stage you’ll want to share the news with loved ones. Make sure your older child is one of the first to know. Obviously, you’ll want to share with parents and other family or friends. But, as soon as you’ve done this sit down privately with your other child and tell them.

It is possible the reaction won’t be as positive as you hope. This isn’t unusual, you need to give them space to digest the news and then talk to them again.

Guide Them Through The Process

Once they have processed the news you can talk to them about how life is likely to change with a new baby. It will affect everyone. Including your child in the process will help them to feel excited about the new addition. It can also help them to identify what they can do to help and the potential fun they could have with a baby.

It’s important to maintain regular conversations with your child. This will allow them to share their concerns and excitement, making it easier for them to accept the baby.

Alone Time

It is very important that, while pregnant, you spend quality time with your child. Focus on what they want to do and help them to understand that you will always find time to spend with them.

They need to appreciate that babies can be noisy and demanding but that this won’t affect your ability to spend time with them. Just make sure you always put time aside to spend with them.

Get Them Involved

Your child can help you choose colours for a nursery, select a name for the baby, or be involved in some other way. Encourage them to be involved in the process and they will find it much easier to see the baby as an exciting new addition to the family rather than a nuisance.

The older the child is the more involved they can be in preparing for the baby, that’s a good thing.

PracticeIt’s easy to pick up a baby doll and have some trial runs at home. This will help your child become used to the crying, holding, and nappy changing. It will make the transition easier.
