When constructing a gaming PC (or upgrading a drained outdated rig), it may be tempting to spring for the perfect parts on provide. Naturally, this implies an enhance in general price, but when that nets you improved gaming efficiency it’s well worth the money, proper?
Not at all times, we are saying. Sure, there are apparent instances the place the above is unfaithful; you don’t need an enormous 1500W energy provide for a 4K gaming system, for instance. But one space the place it’s all too simple to casually overspend is drives, be they arduous drives or shiny new SSDs. How a lot is an excessive amount of, although? Let’s break down the details.
The attract of high-speed SSDs (that’s Solid State Drives, for the uninitiated) is powerful, particularly when your load occasions are dragging the entire staff down between rounds of Rainbow Six: Siege. ‘SSD’ chant your randomly-matched squadmates in textual content chat, properly conscious that your ageing arduous drive is holding everybody again.
HDDs (Hard Disk Drives) had been the predominant type of information storage in each customized and pre-built computer systems for a few years. Utilising a spinning platter for the studying and writing of knowledge, they had been sluggish and loud however in the end probably the most reasonably priced and dependable type of storage.
Enter SSDs, which rose to reputation within the early 2010s. Although this completely different type of drive had existed for a long time previous to its entrance into the broader client market, their extra complicated development and smaller bodily measurement made them far too costly for typical use. Without any shifting parts, SSDs had been perfect for laptops and silent PCs, providing far higher potential speeds.

Connection confusion
Today, there are three essential forms of drive you should purchase for use in a customized PC construct. 3.5-inch HDDs are the biggest and least expensive, whereas M.2 SSDs (additionally known as NVMe drives) are pricey however extraordinarily quick and compact. 2.5-inch SSDs sit between the 2. We’re not going to get into extra esoteric types of drive right here, however you can take a look at Intel’s Optane drives if you’re within the really high-tech stuff.
3.5-inch HDDs and a couple of.5-inch SSDs use the identical energy cables and each hook up with the motherboard by way of a SATA III cable. They can usually be put in on the identical mounts inside a PC case, secured utilizing screws or clip-on drive trays. M.2 SSDs, then again, are compact strips of silicon and microchips which can be put in straight onto the motherboard, generally accompanied by a thermal protect that helps to dissipate warmth buildup.
None are significantly tough to put in, and nearly each PC case could have room for a number of drives no matter which kind you decide; keep in mind that M.2 drives are sometimes perfect for compact PCs, since they require no further energy or connection cables and take up nearly no room contained in the case. If you’re seeking to assemble a super-small mini-ITX system, M.2 is usually your best option no matter different standards.
Speed racers
If you’re nonetheless rocking a traditional HDD in your gaming system, you’ll in all probability have seen that fashionable triple-A video games can have some significantly prolonged load occasions. I actually solely upgraded to an M.2 SSD final yr (principally as a result of laziness) and the distinction is night time and day; Mass Effect: Legendary Edition barely offers me time to learn the loading display screen hints now.
The information pace restrict of the SATA III interface (utilized by each HDDs and a couple of.5-inch SSDs) is about 550MB/s. SATA SSDs will usually hit this restrict, whereas HDDs usually tend to languish at round 100MB/s, with speeds of as much as 200MB/s in superior fashions. While HDDs are theoretically able to hitting quicker speeds—Seagate’s Mach.2 Exos 2X14 arduous drive is able to 524MB/s transfers, albeit utilizing a special interface—they’re not perfect for gaming.
M.2 SSDs, then again, are the pace demons of storage. Plugging straight into the motherboard, these use a PCIe interface (sometimes PCIe 3.0 or 4.0, relying on the PC itself) with the intention to hit switch speeds measured in gigabytes per second, somewhat than megabytes.

The common PCIe 3.0 SSD, generally referred to as Gen3 SSDs, will provide switch speeds within the vary of 1.5 to three.5GB/s. This is already massively quicker than something utilizing a SATA connection, and Gen3 M.2 drives are suitable with the overwhelming majority of contemporary motherboards and processors.
Gen4 M.2 SSDs (that's to say, SSDs that use the newer PCIe 4.0 interface) provide even quicker speeds, sometimes between 5 and 7GB/s. These drives are good for anybody shifting round massive quantities of knowledge on the common, though they do are inclined to price greater than PCIe 3.0 SSDs and require a PCIe 4.0-compatible PC to operate at full pace.
Gaming purposes
So, to return to the unique query, do you need an SSD for gaming? The quick reply is sure, however it’s greatest to think about your precise wants earlier than making a purchase order. Even simply upgrading from an HDD to a 2.5-inch SSD will present important enhancements as well and cargo occasions in video games, with M.2 drives providing even higher efficiency.
It’s value noting that a greater drive gained’t really make your video games run higher. Framerates and texture loading are tied to different parts (mainly your CPU and GPU), so if you don’t thoughts some loading occasions right here and there, a 2.5-inch SSD will just do positive.
These drives are very reasonably priced these days, with 1TB of storage from a dependable producer costing round 100 {dollars}. If you’re constructing a gaming PC on a good funds, a small SATA SSD is a good alternative; you can get a 240GB drive for underneath forty bucks.

M.2 drives are the place issues get a bit extra difficult. While these have additionally change into considerably cheaper lately, they do price greater than SATA drives and have higher efficiency variance. Be certain to do your analysis when contemplating which M.2 SSD to purchase, as some are unable to achieve the supposed most speeds the format presents.
M.2 be or not M.2 be?
PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 is one other attention-grabbing query. Although Gen4 M.2 drives are vastly quicker than their Gen3 counterparts, the sensible distinction in most video games isn’t considerable; in real-world phrases, this will register as a load time of two seconds as a substitute of three seconds, a change that the majority avid gamers merely gained’t discover.
Gen4 drives could be fairly costly, particularly for higher-capacity SSDs (i.e. these bigger than 1TB), though as new Gen4 drives hit the market the costs have equalised considerably with Gen3 SSDs. This varies between manufacturers, but when you need an M.2 drive and might get the identical quantity of storage at Gen4 with out paying greater than you would a Gen3, I extremely suggest it.
For many, this shall be a query of future-proofing. You need a motherboard and processor with PCIe 4.0 help to make use of them—for instance, an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X CPU and X570 motherboard—however a Gen4 drive can nonetheless be used at PCIe 3.0 speeds in an older machine, standing prepared for future upgrades.
Ultimately, my suggestion comes all the way down to price versus need. If you need an affordable and straightforward improve to your HDD, a 2.5-inch SSD will do the trick. If you’ve bought a bit more cash to spend, bypassing Gen3 SSDs and going straight for a Gen4 drive appears to be like like your best option proper now; whereas the efficiency advantages are minor, video games solely proceed to develop in file measurement and PCIe 4.0 presents the most effective potential for peak efficiency sooner or later. Just promise me you gained’t empty your pockets for a Gen4 SSD till you’ve learn some product opinions.
