Two-minute review
The Apple Watch 6 (or Apple Watch Series 6, if you wish to be all correct about it) is the most recent watch from the corporate alongside the Apple Watch SE that launched on the identical time.
Apple Watches are rising in reputation to the purpose the place most will know that they are small second screens that join your iPhone to your wearable, and also you is likely to be questioning whether or not the brand new machine gives something massively alluring; in the event you're excited about upgrading from an older model you’ll be particularly eager to be taught what’s new right here.
Well, listed below are the highlights: beginning at $399 / £379 / AU$599 for the 40mm model, Apple’s new Watch has a blood oxygen sensor inside, new colours to please (we’re into the pink) and a extra environment friendly S6 engine at its coronary heart. It’s additionally speculated to have a brighter show in sunny situations – we’ll come to that shortly.
Beyond that, the remainder of the brand new options that arrive with the Watch 6, like sleep monitoring, hand-wash monitoring, and new buckle-less bands, will likely be made out there to older Apple Watches.
Put shortly: the Apple Watch 6 is the corporate's most refined wearable but, however there is not sufficient new right here that will benefit upgrading to the most recent smartwatch. We're eagerly awaiting the following model, the Apple Watch 7, which is anticipated to launch in September or October, and no matter new options could are available in it.
On the surface, the Apple Watch 6 continues with the identical design language utilized in earlier fashions – a rounded, steel physique with a sq. show that curves elegantly into the machine itself.
The new colours and designs are fascinating, with the brand new blue and pink flavors, specifically, interesting on the wrist, the aluminum casing mixing properly with the extra placing hues.
The show, utilizing OLED know-how, is as shiny and clear as ever – we didn’t discover any additional brightness outdoors, regardless of the claims made by Apple, however equally we by no means struggled to learn the show, due to the wealthy colours and good distinction ratios.
As it has been in recent times, health is the important thing focus of the brand new Apple Watch, and it’s extra distinguished than ever. A brand new sensor lets you see how well-saturated your blood is with that ever-so-useful oxygen, and for probably the most half it really works effectively.
However, Apple is obvious that it’s not a medical device, and will solely be used for monitoring basic health or wellness – so whereas it’s an fascinating factor to take a look at now and again, it doesn’t really feel like a headline characteristic.
Update: watchOS 8 was introduced at WWDC 2021, bringing extra software program and options when it absolutely launches later this 12 months. Eager followers can get the developer preview now in the event that they're a part of the developer program, or be part of the general public beta in July.
Of extra curiosity is the brand new Fitness Plus service from Apple, which lets Watch customers work together with health exercises wherever they're – and any new Apple Watch will include three free months of exercises to attempt.
As an total health tracker, the Apple Watch 6 feels prefer it’s bought some unbelievable advantages – nice exercise monitoring, good monitoring and motivation to remain lively, a variety of monitored actions – however there’s nonetheless no step as much as a ‘pro mode’ for many who wish to take their health to a different stage. There’s undoubtedly potential Apple isn’t exploiting.
As ever, battery life on a brand new Apple Watch is unusual. Once once more, we repeatedly bought far longer than the marketed 18 hours between prices, normally hitting round 28-30 hours earlier than needing to succeed in for the charging cable.
The factor is, that’s nonetheless not lengthy sufficient for what this Watch might do. With sleep monitoring now on board, you’ve bought one other helpful metric that will help you carry on prime of your well being.
But you continue to have to work out while you’re going to search out that 90-minute window every day to cost your Watch, in the event you’re not going to do it in a single day, which is irritating.
WatchOS 7 brings a couple of small upgrades – Apple’s not saying as a lot, however it’s clear that some are designed to assist out within the present pandemic we’re dealing with: a hand-washing monitor simply coincidentally showing appears unlikely, and it’s a helpful weapon within the struggle in opposition to Covid-19, even when the monitoring is slightly laborious to please.
The new Apple Watch 6 is the perfect Apple has to supply within the wearable area, and in the event you’re apprehensive about both your coronary heart well being or respiratory system, these additional options will convey you a welcome diploma of reassurance.
However, for a lot of customers – particularly those that aren’t bothered about having an always-on show – the Apple Watch SE gives practically each characteristic that the Watch 6 is packing, and does it for much much less of an outlay.
Apple Watch 6 launch date and worth
The Apple Watch 6 launch date was Friday, September 18, and also you're in a position to choose one up on-line or in-store with (relative) ease.
In phrases of the Apple Watch 6 worth, you’re $399 / £379 / AU$599 for the 40mm model, whereas the 44mm model begins at $429 / £409 / AU$649 (these costs are for the GPS-only model, with out mobile connectivity).

If you need an LTE-ready watch, the 40mm begins at $499 / £479 / AU$749, and the 44mm at $529 / £509 / AU$799.
The costliest model will nonetheless set you again $1,499 / £1,449 / AU$2,259 in the event you go for probably the most luxurious straps and end - however Apple nonetheless believes that vogue has a big half to play within the attract of its Watch.
And bear in mind: you possibly can nonetheless plump for the Apple Watch 3 for $199 / £199 / AU$299, or attempt to discover the similarly-specced Apple Watch 5 discounted at many retailers. The Apple Watch SE begins at $279 / £269 / AU$429 so it is one other lower-cost different you would go for.
Design
- Great new colours
- Identical design to latest years
- New Solo loops to select from
The Apple Watch Series 6 design is identical as that of any latest Apple Watch (as in, from the Apple Watch 4 onwards).
Coming in 40mm and 44mm flavors for smaller or bigger wrists respectively, you will see the identical rounded edges that merge into the display, the digital crown that spins by way of the interface with a easy flick of the finger, and the facility button beneath that features as a option to bounce between apps.
On the rear of the Apple Watch 6 you've got bought a coronary heart charge monitor that is been upgraded repeatedly, and which right here contains new options like blood oxygen sensing and the electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor, along with checking in your common coronary heart charge and alerting you if issues get increased or decrease than regular.
The Apple Watch 6 can be 5ATM licensed, which suggests it may be used for swimming and pop all the way down to a depth of 50m for 10 minutes in the event you so want - however, in actuality, it signifies that the Apple Watch is absolutely protected in opposition to ‘normal’ swimming.
The greater story when it comes to the Apple Watch 6 design is the brand new vary of colours – and the shade that’s significantly caught our eye is pink. It's (PRODUCT) pink, a shade that Apple has used for a couple of years now to assist promote the group attempting to rid the world of AIDS, and it is by far probably the most placing shade of the bunch – and, fortunately, the one we bought to review.
The different colours, (gold, silver, graphite, area grey and blue), are additionally premium-looking, and match properly with the well-manufactured really feel of the Apple Watch. The worth is excessive, granted, however you are getting a superbly made machine to your money.
It's light-weight too – at 36.5 grams (for the 44mm version) we did not really feel it weighing down our wrist fairly often, and it is generally simple to neglect you have got it on.
As ever, you’re in a position to customise your Watch with completely different bands, and the brand new addition in 2020 is the Solo Loop, an (costly) band that does not have a buckle or velcro to clasp it collectively, and which is as a substitute manufactured from stretchy silicone or braided silicone that you just pull over your hand onto your wrist.
Sadly, the Solo Loop we had been despatched for review functions was too massive – it hung like a bangle across the wrist – however we might see the promise of with the ability to simply slip it over the wrist, and never must fiddle with clasps, or fear about it flopping round in the course of the day.
Display
- Good OLED know-how
- Always-on show will be helpful
- Finally dims at night time when monitoring sleep
The Apple Watch 6 show makes use of OLED know-how, and it is a fine-looking display consequently. When you are in darker locations, it is solely the numbers, letters or no matter's on the display that you could see, as OLED know-how permits unbelievable distinction between the black and white tones, which makes no matter is on the Apple Watch 6 look actually placing.
Where older Apple Watch fashions (and the brand new Apple Watch SE) require you to boost your wrist to see what the time is or examine a notification, the Watch 6 continues the place the Watch 5 left off with an always-on show.
This means you need not elevate your wrist to see the time or an alert, and might simply look all the way down to see what's taking place. Depending on the watch face you've got bought arrange – and there at the moment are many – you will additionally see up to date data on information, well being stats or battery life while not having to boost up the Apple Watch and absolutely wake your machine (which can use extra energy).
However, whereas that is helpful, we really feel it is nonetheless not well-implemented. The always-on show is useful at instances, however largely we simply wish to see the time. The drawback is that, despite the fact that the display of the Apple Watch 6 dims when it is not being checked out, it’s nonetheless somewhat shiny.
So each time issues get darker, you both have to put it into theater / cinema mode (which is irritating to do, after which requires a button-press to show the time), start sleep monitoring to get the low-light monochrome model of the show or simply settle for that your watch will likely be glowing somewhat brightly.
We'd somewhat there was an possibility for only a very, very dimly-glowing set of numbers for the time – we do not wish to see the entire watch face, just a bit view of the time that is not distracting.
Blood oxygen monitor
- Interesting characteristic
- Not designed for medical use, so can it's trusted?
- Needs alerts embedded
The Apple Watch is clearly a wearable that’s designed for health, and the Apple Watch 6 is the head of the corporate’s well being and health ambitions to date. Every 12 months we get new health and wellness options, so let's start with the large one for the Watch 6: the blood oxygen monitor.
Firstly, let's not neglect that it has been round as an possibility on different wearables just like the Fitbit Charge 4 (and telephones, together with members of the Samsung Galaxy vary) for a very long time now.
So it is not a brand new characteristic, however the query is how Apple is implementing it into the brand new watch, and whether or not it may be actually helpful, particularly when the world is dealing with a respiratory disease-based pandemic.
But earlier than we get to that, let's simply remind ourselves what a blood oxygen (or SPO2) sensor truly does. Firing pink and infra-red gentle underneath the pores and skin, the diodes on the underside of the Apple Watch 6 can learn the colour of your blood, and work out from that how a lot oxygen you are pumping round.
There are varied opinions on what 'good' seems like for a proportion, however in the event you're over 95% then typically you are in an excellent place.
You can run a devoted SPO2 take a look at on the watch, sitting nonetheless for 15 seconds to check it, or you possibly can have the Apple Watch 6 take a look at all through the day – we did each, and the outcomes largely matched up, and for probably the most half we had been above the 95% threshold.
But... for probably the most half. According to the Health app on the cellphone, which data this info, there was a second when our SPO2 stage fell to 88% – was that one thing to fret about? We assumed that, as a result of it wasn't repeated, it was simply an outlier studying, however it was nonetheless slightly disconcerting to see.

And therein lies the rub with the brand new SPO2 sensor on the Apple Watch. On the one hand, it may be comforting to see your blood oxygen stage sitting properly the place it ought to be… however equally, Apple is saying the Apple Watch 6 is categorically not a medical machine, and will solely be used to your personal info (which, it ought to be famous, most wearables available on the market with an SPO2 sensor are stating as effectively).
What do you do with that data if Apple says it is not designed for medical use? Should we belief it? Or ought to it's ignored if the outcomes may differ with match and movement now and again?
Well, the straightforward reply is: it is a good factor to have to remain knowledgeable. If you are seeing a drop in SPO2 usually concurrently feeling different sick results, you possibly can head to the physician to place your thoughts at relaxation. If you are at elevation, and out of the blue the oxygen saturation stage in your blood drops, you can also make a choice.
But it feels odd that Apple is not providing you with notifications that your SPO2 dropped randomly by way of the night time – which might signify the sometimes-serious situation of sleep apnea – or, advising you, when your coronary heart charge will get decrease or increased than normal at relaxation, whether or not that you must do one thing about it immediately.
We're undecided why Apple is not providing these alerts, and it makes it laborious to say whether or not the SPO2 meter is especially helpful consequently.
However, mixed with the power to take an ECG and monitor your coronary heart's common output, it is nonetheless a consolation, and people with coronary heart situations would most likely nonetheless gravitate in direction of the Watch 6 consequently.
Fitness
- New exercise choices
- Still wants a 'professional' health mode
- GPS can go barely awry
With the brand new Apple Watch 6, there are such a lot of methods to regulate your basic wellbeing, and with the ability to shut your ‘Move Rings’, the metric Apple makes use of to let you know the way lively you are being.
With every new Apple Watch launch, the model brings extra methods to trace your efforts so that you actually know the way lively you're, and encourage you to attempt information issues as effectively.
As common readers of SociallyTrend will know, we're actually into operating. Chucking on a Garmin or Apple Watch and going for a couple of miles’ jaunt is one thing we repeatedly take pleasure in, and the Apple Watch is getting higher at monitoring that every 12 months.
Running is now joined by extra actions than ever, with dancing and ‘cooling down’ being added to the rising roster of health options.
But it’s not nearly transferring: the Watch helps with being conscious and meditating (the latter is made particularly simple due to the onboard 'Breathe' app, which tickles your wrist with small vibrations to let you know when to breathe in or out).
With your Watch each monitoring these actions and monitoring your coronary heart charge, you are getting an correct calorie burn, so you possibly can see how effectively you are doing in the event you're on a health kick.
The Apple Watch 6 (and others within the Watch vary) can even make it easier to in your option to your targets of standing sufficient instances, transferring sufficient or getting sufficient train by prompting you at instances by way of the day to get lively when it thinks you have got a second to do it – it is somewhat useful.
However, the health monitoring on the Apple Watch can be restricted in a couple of methods too. We took the Watch 6, Watch SE, Watch 5 and Watch 4 out for a 15-mile run, and there are nonetheless a couple of issues the Watch 6 hasn't mounted.
Firstly, the operating a part of the Workouts app remains to be a bit restricted. Apple makes it in order that the GPS inside (which ought to be pretty correct, as you possibly can hook up with a number of satellites to search out your location) would not must 'lock' earlier than that you must begin operating, with a purpose to simply get you out and pounding the pavement.
It's good while you're beginning out, however much less correct while you construct as much as longer distances. Comparing the Watch vary to the Garmin, which does require a correct GPS lock earlier than beginning, there was a small disparity in our distance-run numbers, particularly when going by way of tree-covered environments.
It additionally assorted fairly a bit when doing the identical run repeatedly – when doing the identical 6.5-mile course with the Watch SE and the Watch 6, we noticed a 0.2-mile disparity, and fairly completely different mile splits all through – which doesn’t breed full confidence within the distance and pace monitoring.
However, on different shorter runs the distances had been fairly comparable, so it could very often simply depend upon the terrain and the way strongly the GPS sign will be picked up.
There's additionally the center charge monitor on the rear – we regularly discover that this on-the-wrist pulse-monitoring know-how is much less correct than carrying a chest strap, and there have been instances when the Apple Watch 6 clearly struggled to maintain a observe on our coronary heart charge after we had been operating.
That should not delay potential Watch homeowners who like the thought of a coronary heart charge monitor on their wrist – it was pretty much as good as something we have examined of late, bar some actually high-end operating watches; it is simply that it nonetheless misplaced connection now and again.
Placing the Watch increased up our arm helped with the accuracy (because it’s simpler for the sensor to learn the heart beat by way of the pores and skin right here), however it wasn’t snug and fell forwards ultimately.
The Apple Watch 6 nonetheless appears like a health wearable for everybody, interesting to the lots somewhat than the health fiend. And that is the best approach spherical – those that need one thing extra devoted can simply discover it elsewhere.
We wish to put on the Watch 6 for the whole lot, although, so it might be nice if Apple geared up this machine with a option to arrange interval coaching, extra simply see laps while you're attempting to beat a mile PB, or simply step up the Workouts app to encourage those that’ve been coaching with the Watch for years to go to the following stage.

Right now health on the Apple Watch nonetheless feels a bit fundamental, and in spite of everything these years we had been hoping to see slightly extra depth.
Battery life
- Easily lasts a full 24 hours, and infrequently longer
- Fast charging is a godsend
- S6 inside chipset makes actions extra environment friendly
The Apple Watch 6 battery life is one other factor we want was improved this 12 months – it is a key factor that is holding again the Apple Watch vary from being an instantaneous advice.
We seen final 12 months that the addition of the always-on show had an actual impression on battery life, and whereas the brand new S6 chipset contained in the Watch 6 has undoubtedly improved the facility effectivity, it hasn’t solved some key points.
Let's begin with one of many oddest issues Apple does: it continuously under-represents the battery lifetime of its Watch vary. Since the very first model of Watch, the claimed battery life has all the time been far too stingy – Apple calls it 'all-day battery life', and pegs the Watch 6 to final 18 hours basically use.
Well, we all the time had it linked to a cellphone or Wi-Fi all day, and we took it operating, managed music, used apps – and we nonetheless all the time bought over 24 hours of use earlier than needing to succeed in for the charger.
However, whereas that may sound like an excellent factor, in actuality 24 hours is not rather more useful than 18, particularly while you issue sleep monitoring into the combination. Now that watchOS 7 lets you monitor your slumber, you actually need a tool that you could take to mattress at night time and can have a good slug of battery remaining while you get up.
The Apple Watch 6 can nearly handle this, however you will have to cost it pretty quickly after waking – so if you are going to use this Watch to the fullest, and get your sleep-track on, then you definitely'll want a day by day window the place you possibly can cost it.
On the plus aspect, the S6 chipset contained in the Apple Watch 6 is, certainly, probably the most environment friendly processor Apple has ever put in a wearable. You’d count on the mixture of the always-on show and the SPO2 sensor can be much more of a battery-drain than on the Apple Watch SE, as an illustration; however, over a 15-mile run, 110-minute run we discovered that the Watch 6 truly used much less battery than the SE, as Apple has made the GPS monitoring extra environment friendly.
The identical is true for music playback, so these smartwatch options are much less of an issue, battery-wise, on Apple’s newest model.
The Watch 6 additionally prices a lot sooner than earlier fashions – in a side-by-side comparability with the Watch SE, from 0% the Watch 6 was absolutely charged in 75 minutes, whereas the Watch SE, with the older S5 chip, took 100 minutes to replenish.
In ‘normal’ use, that's with the SPO2 sensor and always-on show firing, the Watch 6 will final 20% lower than the Watch SE in the identical utilization situations, though in fact you possibly can all the time flip these options off – you gained’t be getting the identical performance, however it's a option to get the perfect battery life on any Apple Watch.
With all of the settings turned off you’ll get comparable battery life to the Apple Watch SE, however with extra longevity throughout exercises or listening to music.
And don’t neglect: there’s no charging block within the field any extra (however you do get a charging cable). That mentioned, in the event you’ve not bought a USB charging block mendacity round someplace, we marvel the place you’ve been for the final decade.
watchOS 7
The Apple Watch 6 is the showcase for the most recent model of Apple’s wearable working system, however the normal caveats apply: the identical options (blood oxygen monitoring excepted) are additionally coming to the brand new Apple Watch SE, and will likely be rolled out to each machine from the Watch 3 onwards.
However, we’re all for testing how these new options carry out on the Watch 6, to see how well-optimized the machine is for them. There are some we’ve not delved into right here, similar to dancing and cool-down monitoring in health, new methods to personalize and share your Watch face with your personal issues, and mapping your bike rides on the go – yow will discover out all about these, and others, in our devoted watchOS 7 hub.
Sleep monitoring
The very first thing we wished to check out with the brand new Apple Watch was sleep monitoring, which has lastly turned up on a wearable from Apple.
It’s a very welcome characteristic for many who are already carrying their Watch in mattress, not least as a result of you possibly can set the time you’re going to sleep and the show turns into monochrome, and also you gained’t be capable of wake it simply, as you’ll have to spin the digital crown to get again in – it’s a wonderful approach that will help you resist the temptation to examine that final notification while you’re speculated to be sinking into slumber.
The sleep monitoring itself could be very fundamental certainly, although. It’ll work out while you bought into mattress based mostly on while you put down your cellphone, and can then monitor how lengthy you’re asleep for. This information is fed into the Health app in your cellphone, so that you’ll be capable of see how your sleep time is rising or lowering over a interval.
There’s no info on whether or not you frolicked in deep sleep, gentle sleep or REM, nor any correlation with bedtimes, or how pressured you had been in the course of the day – these are quick changing into commonplace options on different health wearables, so we anticipated extra from Apple right here.
The wake-up display is sweet, exhibiting you the quantity of battery left and the climate for the day – so whereas it's a restricted characteristic, the weather it does have are effectively executed.
Hand-washing monitoring
The hand-washing characteristic apparently wasn’t created in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, however its presence on the Apple Watch 6 is helpful for reminding you to clean your arms for 20 seconds, offering a countdown as you accomplish that.
It’s a characteristic that began off being fairly erratic for us, however over the a
