Like Kamal Kaur influencers have millions of followers, brand partnerships, and even A-lister status, their presence online can come with sometimes sinister consequences. Yet two recent instances from Punjab and Haryana have opened India's eyes to the evil of internet fame.
Kamal Kaur, a popular Instagram user with 400,000 followers, was viciously slaughtered after her posts "hurt the sentiments" of a band of radicals.
Only days later, the body of fellow influencer Sheetal Choudhary, 27 - who had a following of 160,000 - was discovered.
Both cases force us to contend with unsettling realities about online abuse, mob shaming, and just how far the shrieking crowds with pitchforks can take things when the bile is left unchecked.
