We've seen footage of the Steam Deck from enjoying indie classics like Stardew Valley to graphical depth video games like Star Wars: A Fallen Order and Death Stranding, the latter of which would not be attainable on the Switch with out some critical cutbacks.
The Steam Deck is considerably extra highly effective than the Nintendo Switch, which implies it is a bit larger consequently. We additionally count on the fan to be barely extra audible than on the Switch, which is often whisper quiet.
Should Nintendo be nervous?
The Steam Deck is not the primary moveable PC we've seen enter the {hardware} house – the likes of Onexplayer have proven that it may be performed. However, Valve's handheld guarantees to ship a extra refined and optimized expertise than earlier makes an attempt from different producers.
It's this focus that makes the Steam Deck a real competitor to the Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and just lately introduced Nintendo Switch OLED. With a value differential of $50, customers will now have a giant determination to make in the case of which moveable console they need to purchase this Christmas, because the Steam Deck has some large plus factors over Nintendo's system.
First of all, accessing Steam and your present library of video games implies that PC house owners who choose up a Steam Deck may doubtlessly have a whole lot of video games to play from day one. The Steam Deck can be way more succesful by way of {hardware} than the Switch, which implies you may run AAA video games, and obtain greater framerates and persistently hit the 720p decision goal.
The Steam Store can be a much more interesting proposition than the Nintendo Switch eShop. While Switch video games tend to be overpriced, Steam is infamous for its attractive reductions and offers, so even when the console itself prices extra on day one, there is a good likelihood you may save in the long term.

It's value noting that the Nintendo Switch OLED will include a extra vibrant show than the Steam Deck's 7-inch LCD display, however till we see the Steam Deck in individual, it is laborious to say simply how good Valve's chosen show performs.
Does the Steam Deck assist each Steam recreation?
As it stands, Valve's Steam Deck will not be capable to run each single title from the Steam Store. In truth, the Steam Deck will not be capable to run Destiny, Apex Legends, PUBG or Rainbow Six Siege, that are extraordinarily in style within the PC gaming house.
The purpose why is as a result of the Steam Deck is not a Windows-based system, Instead delivery with SteamOS 3.0, which is an Arch-based Linux distribution . Because the handheld Pc is Linux-based, because of this not each recreation is appropriate, notably ones that use anti-cheat software program.
Valve developed a function known as Proton, which is designed to fight this drawback, however the firm is wanting into "improving Proton's game compatibility and support for anti-cheat solutions by working directly with the vendors".
If Valve can guarantee a strategy to get a stable anti-cheat up and operating on Proton, it'll permit lots of Steam's in style multiplayer titles to run on the system. Valve has talked about it is planning to make each main Steam recreation playable on Proton and thus far it claims it is but to discover a recreation that the Steam Deck cannot run (presumably exterior of the anti-cheating software program subject), which remains to be nice information for potential patrons.
It's value noting that proton is not an emulator for Windows-based video games. A greater strategy to describe it will be a translator that tells Linux methods to run sometimes incompatible Windows-based packages.
Of course, whereas SteamOS would possibly sound barely restrictive based mostly on this info, it is vital to make clear that Valve has stated you can actually set up Windows for those who needed to. However, we would not be shocked if these points are ironed out earlier than the handheld's launch in December.
Steam Deck vs Nintendo Switch value comparability
How does the Steam Deck stack as much as Nintendo's trio of Switch fashions in the case of value? Remember that each one Steam Deck purchases include a free case, and the excessive finish 512GB model consists of premium anti-glare etched glass. Both the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch include expandable storage through a microSD slot.
| Price | |
| Steam Deck (64GB) | $399 / £349 |
| Steam Deck (256GB) | $529 / £459 |
| Steam Deck (512GB) | $649 / £569 |
| Nintendo Switch | $299 / £279.99 / AU$449 |
| Nintendo Switch OLED | $349 / £309 / AU$549 |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | $199.99 / £199.99 / AU$329.95 |
Valve's Steam Deck appears like it'll present stern competitors for Nintendo's Switch, then, and might be a viable various for these seeking to pickup a hybrid system that may additionally operate as a desktop gaming PC, albeit at the price of graphical efficiency.
Steam Deck information and updates
Steam Deck should not undergo from stick drift
There’s doubtlessly excellent news for many who are nervous that the Steam Deck would possibly develop stick drift – one thing which has plagued Switch house owners.
In an interview with IGN, Valve {hardware} engineer Yazan Aldehayyat stated that the group has “done a ton of testing on reliability,” by way of the handheld’s inputs and that they selected {hardware} that had well-known efficiency information. “We didn’t want to take a risk on that, right?” Aldehayyat stated. “As I’m sure our customers don’t want us to take a risk on that either.”
It’s a reduction to listen to that Valve has seemingly taken steps to keep away from stick drift from growing on the Steam Deck, a difficulty which has affected numerous Nintendo Switch house owners and has been dubbed “Joy-Con drift”.
The inside storage might be upgradeable
The Steam Deck's inside storage might be upgradable, in response to a thread on Reddit, although Valve does not advocate doing so. Valve notes that the system drive is “not intended for end-user replacement”, which presumably implies that the M.2 socket is buried contained in the system in a manner that may entail taking all of it aside in a warranty-voiding method (operating the danger of breaking the Steam Deck within the course of, with no recourse).
Still, the likelihood might be there, which could encourage extra individuals to choose the 64GB or 256GB fashions in the event that they know they'll develop sooner or later.
We’ll be preserving our ear to the bottom for any extra Steam Deck information and bulletins, and can replace this web page accordingly ought to we hear extra.

Steam Deck will not be restricted to 30Hz
There have been early considerations that you'd be capped at 30fps in your favourite video games, no matter efficiency limitations. This has now been laid to relaxation after a Valve developer confirmed that the Steam Deck is concentrating on 30fps at least, however will embody handbook framerate limitations for customers to reinforce efficiency ought to they select to take action.

Games will run simply effective off an SD card
Any fears that you must get the most costly model of the Steam Deck to run video games at a playable high quality may be put to mattress. Valve developer Lawrence Yang tweeted that whereas video games will run higher on built-in storage, everything will nonetheless play simply effective on a microSD.
This is nice information for players who is likely to be undecided as to what model of the Steam Deck they want to purchase. SD playing cards themselves generally is a dear funding for those who're searching for one thing with an enormous quantity of storage and a speedy learn/write velocity, but when you have already got one laying round then you can definitely save a couple of pennies on Valves' console.
You will not get a efficiency enhance when docked
We might have been so involved about the Stream Deck's means to play video games at greater framerates that we did not cease to contemplate how docking the system would have an effect on its efficiency.
Despite the Nintendo Switch boosting video games to 1080p when the console is docked (up from its native 720p), Valve did not see the necessity to embody an identical function for its personal moveable gaming system. This might imply that you're going to see higher efficiency on the Steam Deck when utilizing it solely as a handheld, particularly for those who solely have a big 4K TV, which is pretty widespread in fashionable houses.

Linux utilization is spiking upwards in response to the most recent stats from Steam, and it appears possible that that is right down to the Steam Deck driving curiosity in Linux gaming.
The freshly launched Steam {hardware} survey for July reveals that Linux now represents a full proportion level of all these gaming on Valve’s platform. Now, 1% would possibly sound like a tiny quantity – and it's clearly only a drop within the general gaming ocean – however it’s a telling milestone for Linux to achieve.
The Steam Deck gained’t be Valve’s solely handheld video games machine
Valve seems to have large ambitions for future handheld gaming units, and Nintendo, the corporate that’s dominated that market prior to now, needs to be nervous.
While Valve CEO Gabe Newell has already stated that the Steam Deck is designed to ascertain “a product category that ourselves and other PC manufacturers are going to be able to participate in,” and which is “going to have long-term benefits for us,” Greg Coomer, a designer concerned with the Steam Deck, has shed extra mild on Valve’s handheld plans.
Coomer reveals that Valve will “continue making devices in this product line.” So, it’s possible we’ll see {hardware} refreshes and different variations. Whether this can be a Steam Deck 2, Steam Deck Pro or one thing else fully isn’t apparent in the meanwhile.
Windows 11 Support is coming to the Steam Deck
The Steam Deck needs to be good to go together with Windows 11, for many who are pondering about changing the default working system – a customized model of Steam OS (Linux) – with Microsoft’s desktop OS.
