SINGAPORE: Singapore intends to import up to 4 gigawatts (GW) of low-carbon electricity by 2035, which is able to make up about 30 per cent of Singapore's electricity supply in that yr.

This comes as Singapore appears to be like to decarbonise its energy sector and diversify its vitality supply sources to improve safety.

In a media launch on Monday (Oct 25), the Energy Market Authority (EMA) introduced that it intends to concern two requests for proposal for up to a complete of 4GW of low-carbon electricity imports.

These requests will define the necessities, together with how electricity imports must be from low-carbon sources, stated EMA.

"Proposals for electricity imported from coal-fired generation sources will not be accepted," it added.

The first request for proposal, which shall be launched subsequent month, will import up to 1.2GW of electricity and start by 2027. The second one is anticipated to be issued within the second quarter of 2023, and shall be for the remaining portions of electricity imports by 2035.

The requests for proposals for electricity imports will permit Singapore to additional its efforts in growing regional energy grids and supporting regional decarbonisation, whereas supporting local weather motion and diversifying vitality sources, stated EMA.

Besides the low-carbon electricity imports, the remaining electricity supply will proceed to come from numerous sources, ranging from the present pure gas-fired energy vegetation to photo voltaic and waste-to-energy sources.

TRIALS TO PREPARE FOR ELECTRICITY IMPORTS

To put together for future electricity imports, the authority has been working with numerous companions over the past two years on trials to import electricity.

These trials permit EMA to assess and refine the technical and regulatory frameworks for importing electricity into Singapore, stated the authority.

EMA has appointed YTL PowerSeraya for a two-year trial to import 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Peninsular Malaysia, following an earlier request for proposal initiated in March. This is anticipated to start in early subsequent yr.

“YTL PowerSeraya was selected as its proposal was best able to meet EMA’s requirements to trial electricity imports via the existing interconnector,” stated the authority.

EMA can also be embarking on a pilot programme to import 100MW equal of non-intermittent electricity from a photo voltaic farm in Pulau Bulan in Indonesia.

The pilot programme, which is anticipated to be commissioned by 2024, shall be performed with a consortium led by energy technology firm PacificLight Power. Electricity shall be equipped by way of a brand new interconnector that straight connects a photo voltaic farm in Pulau Bulan to a PacificLight Power powerstation in Singapore.

Singapore can also be engaged on a venture to import up to 100MW of energy from Laos to Singapore by way of Thailand and Malaysia. Known because the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project, electricity shall be equipped utilizing present interconnections from 2023 to 2023.

Last month, the 4 international locations reaffirmed their dedication in the direction of the venture, and stated that they appeared ahead to the early finalisation of all agreements underpinning the venture to start cross-border energy commerce subsequent yr.

"The project will serve as a pathfinder towards realising the broader ASEAN Power Grid vision of multilateral electricity trading in the region," stated EMA.
