So what's the Snapdragon G3x Handheld?
The Snapdragon G3x Handheld Developer Kit is, primarily, a supercharged smartphone gaming platform with a devoted controller constructed round it. This isn’t precisely a new idea given the all-in-one Steam Deck and Nvidia Shield Portable earlier than it (amongst others) – it’s simply making use of these to cell gaming. But not like earlier cellphone gaming setups which are both add-ons for particular fashions just like the Kunai Gamepad for the Asus ROG 5 or wrap-round controllers just like the Backbone and Razer Kishi, the Snapdragon G3x Handheld doesn’t function a cellphone in any respect. There’s a good quantity of cellphone DNA within the Snapdragon G3x Handheld, although: a 6.65-inch Full HD Plus OLED show with 10-bit HDR and a 120Hz refresh charge, 5MP 1080p webcam, and Android working system all really feel inherited from telephones. Plus, it has cell connectivity, permitting gamers to take the console on the go and play anyplace they might with a cellphone. But there are some novel issues that Qualcomm is bringing from cell gaming to consoles, too. While we don’t have a lot info on the Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 chipset powering the G3x Handheld, the corporate claims the silicon will energy superior haptics and different extras – which ought to elevate the gaming expertise on the console above how it feels to play on a cellphone. Its Adreno GPU may even have updateable drivers – and whereas Qualcomm's flagship chips have been capable of download updates from the Play Store to their Adreno GPUs since final 12 months's flagship Snapdragon 865, per Android Authority, that required producers to customise and publish the updates for his or her gadgets. A cell gaming console producer would conceivably get to those updates quicker.
The {hardware} is more fitted to gaming, too – which is probably going all Razer’s affect, from the angled controller grips, buttons, and thumb sticks to the air-cooling system that intakes cool air from the console’s again and expels scorching air out the highest. (Ideally, this may maintain the G3x Handheld from overheating and shedding frames, which might occur with much less highly effective or poorly-cooled telephones.)Crucially, it additionally has a USB-C port on the prime to output 4K HDR and as much as 144Hz to a linked TV or monitor, permitting it to energy play on a massive display screen a la the Nintendo Switch’s dock – but beating that console to the 4K punch. The port may output to an ‘XR viewer’ (like augmented actuality glasses), which Qualcomm believes will take off within the coming years. The G3x Handheld additionally has 4-approach audio system, a 1080p webcam for streaming, and mics on the middle and prime of the system. At least one model connects to sub-6 and mmWave 5G, too, permitting for the quickest attainable cell gaming, together with WiFi 6E.
This all makes the G3X sound like a powerful approach to spruce up your cell gaming for many who have additional money to spare. What makes the console stand out above different peripherals is the software program offered by AKSys Games Localization, which auto-maps on-display screen controls to buttons and thumb sticks. If you’ve performed with cellphone gaming peripherals earlier than, you know the way audacious this declare is: irrespective of how slick your controller design, it’s nugatory if you can’t get button presses to sync up with on-display screen contact controls. If Qualcomm and Razer can pull this off, it might make the G3x Handheld and standalone cell gaming consoles as a entire enticing sufficient to justify the expense and problem.
Hope for a Snapdragon cell console future
The Snapdragon G3x Handheld actually looks as if an odd system to announce publicly, but solely from a client perspective. Qualcomm desires game builders and potential console producers to imagine that this product area of interest is not only attainable, but inevitable. The firm is betting a completely new chipset line on it.So who would a cell console be for? Qualcomm and Razer see fashionable players as nomadic, switching between platforms even to play the identical video games. The G3x Handheld serves players-on-the-go as it can play already-common cell video games on the system, but additionally host video games streamed from the cloud given its cell connectivity. As a developer-centered system, the G3x Handheld has the liberty to supply loads of options that is likely to be trimmed away in a client-dealing with console – the aforementioned XR glasses compatibility is a good instance given its sparse adoption to this point. But in the end, the G3x Handheld is a harbinger, a minimum of in accordance with Qualcomm and Razer: cell gaming made up 52% of the $175 billion made by the worldwide gaming trade final 12 months, and it’s solely rising bigger (by comparability, PC made up 21% and console 28%). Mobile gaming will proceed to evolve, and the G3x Handheld is a technique that system makers might introduce new methods to serve an ever-rising market.
