APJ Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 and served as the 11th President of India from the year 2002 to 2007. He was born and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu as well as studied physics and aerospace engineering.

He spent four decades as a scientist and science administrator, largely at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) along with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was familiarly involved in civilian space programme and military missile development efforts of India. Therefore he is also popularly known as the “Missile Man of India” for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology.

Later on 2002, he was elected as the 11th President of India with the support of both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party as well as the then-opposition Indian National Congress. He was also widely referred to as the “People’s President”.

Sadly, while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong, on 27 July 2015, Kalam collapsed and died from an apparent cardiac arrest, at the age of 83.
