30-second review
UPDATE: The Nanoleaf Essentials Lightstrip had a couple of lacking options at launch, specifically music and display syncing. Those have now been rolled out and we have up to date our authentic review under to mirror that change.
Stepping away from its mild panels, Nanoleaf has gone again to fundamentals with its Essentials A19 good bulb and Essentials Lightstrip. What makes them each thrilling choices within the good lighting market is their affordability with out compromising on options.
Like its bulb brother, the Nanoleaf Essentials Lightstrip can also be appropriate with Apple’s HomeEquipment and Google Assistant, it’s remarkably simple to arrange and has its personal little controller that may be wall-mounted for use like a daily switchboard.
It can positively give Philips Hue’s Lightstrip Plus a run for its cash, particularly now (nearly a yr since its authentic launch in late 2020) that there is options like monitor syncing which was lacking till the final spherical of firmware updates.

Like the Essentials good bulb although, the sunshine strip’s full potential can solely be unlocked by utilizing a Thread-enabled machine just like the Apple HomePod mini or the most recent Apple TV 4K. But we discovered its Bluetooth connectivity to greater than adequate for anybody with out both of the aforementioned Apple gadgets.
All in all, the Essentials Lightstrip is a lovely choice for anybody seeking to brighten up their dwelling decor with some good lights.
Price and availability
- Announced November 2020
- Affordable
- Expansion packs obtainable
At simply $49.95 / £44.99 / AU$99.99 for the two-meter strip, the Nanoleaf Essentials Lightstrip is arguably essentially the most inexpensive good mild strip you will get right this moment. In comparability, the 2m Philips Hue equal (V4 White and Color Ambiance) prices about $80 / £70 / AU$149. That makes the Essentials a much more enticing choice, with an identical characteristic set and Thread connectivity inbuilt.
Design
- Available in 1m and 2m packs
- Has its personal controller
- 21 LEDs per meter
The Nanoleaf Essentials Lightstrip isn’t remarkably completely different from most others obtainable in the marketplace right this moment. The starter pack is a 2m (80 inches) strip that’s a contact over half-inch large, housing 21 LEDs per meter in teams of 5.
Meter-long (40-inch) expansions can be found, and as much as eight might be linked to the Lightstrip for a complete of 10m (400 inches). Anything extra and the brightness might be affected.
Like the Nanoleaf mild panels, the Essentials Lightstrip has a peel-and-stick adhesive layer on the again, and comes with an influence cable linked to a small controller (additionally with its personal adhesive pads) at one finish and a fairly chunky AC adaptor on the different. Another small cable connects the strip itself to the controller by way of tiny pins.
The controller can deal with all the fundamental features – energy on/off, cycle by means of single colours and dim/brighten the sunshine. It can’t change Scenes, although, for which you will have to make use of the Nanoleaf app.
Setup
- Easy to make use of
- App not intuitive
Setting up the Nanoleaf Lightstrip isn’t very completely different from another mild strip in the marketplace. You have to measure the floor you need the lights on, then reduce the required size and stick it on. You can’t reduce wherever, after all – Nanoleaf has marked the right spots with a scissor icon at intervals of 33cm (13 inches), so your ultimate strip is perhaps both a bit small or a bit longer than you may want, a problem you’ll face with any mild strip.

Once you’ve caught your strip the place you need it, you may stick the controller to a close-by floor (wall or shelving unit) to resemble a switchboard. Then plug the AC adaptor right into a wall socket, swap it on and scan the QR code supplied within the field with both Apple’s Home app or the Nanoleaf companion app. Even for those who use the latter and occur to be an iPhone or iPad consumer, the sunshine will mechanically get added to the Home app. You can set it up by way of the Google Home app for those who’re an Android consumer.
As talked about earlier, the Lightstrip is Thread-enabled, which means there’s an alternate option to join, supplied you've got what is named a Thread ‘border’ router. While there are a number of gadgets from Google and Amazon which have Thread radios in them to work as routers, none of them have been ‘switched on’, with the only real exception of the Apple HomePod mini and, extra lately, the most recent Apple TV 4K. If you occur to personal Apple’s diminutive good speaker or streaming field, the Lightstrip might be linked instantly with no additional steps wanted.
When linked by way of Thread, the Lightstrip is fast to reply, however is a bit slower when used over Bluetooth.
Performance
- Very vibrant
- Advanced options want Thread connectivity
The mild strip has a rated life span of 25,000 hours, with white mild temperatures starting from a heat 2,700 Kelvin to a chilly 6,500 Kelvin. There’s additionally assist for 16 million colours however solely a single coloration might be displayed at a time, which is a disgrace as the consequences of coloration zones might be fairly mesmerizing.
For a lightweight strip, the Essentials is vibrant – the place the Philips Hue V4 White and Color Ambiance has a most brightness of 1,600 lumens, the Nanoleaf tops out 2,200 lumens, with common brightness of two,000 lumens. When utilizing a only a white or yellow hue in full brightness, it is sufficient to mild up a room fairly effectively.
If you have already got an Apple HomePod mini or the Apple TV 4K and have linked the Lightstrip utilizing Thread protocol, then you definitely’ll discover the lights responding to any command instantly. On the opposite hand, for those who’ve linked by way of Bluetooth – which is what is going to occur for those who don’t personal a HomePod mini – the lights take between two to 4 seconds to reply, even for those who’re effectively inside vary. This lag is a bit longer than what we discovered with the Essentials A19 mild bulb working over Bluetooth, and is usually a little irritating, however not as soon as did we discover that the Lightstrip failed to reply.
At launch, the Lightstrip’s most attention-grabbing options hadn't been rolled out but, like with the ability to mirror a monitor’s colours or the lights syncing to current Nanoleaf Shapes panels and ambient music. A latest firmware replace has now added these options, however you'll have to be linked to a Thread machine to make use of these options – anybody working the sunshine strip by way of Bluetooth goes to lose out.
That stated, Circadian Lighting is offered on the Lightstrip (like it's on the Essentials bulb) and this mechanically tunes the colour temperature of the sunshine to swimsuit the time of day in your location. You may also apply some Scenes which can be obtainable on the Nanoleaf app (there is a huge library of these), and the adventurous can create their very own customized Scenes, however word that solely a single coloration might be displayed at a time – no rainbow hues right here.

While the Lightstrip is appropriate with each Siri and Google Assistant, there’s no assist for Alexa, though Nanoleaf has promised that it’s excessive on its to-do listing.
Verdict
While good bulbs have develop into commonplace, mild strips are nonetheless not fairly as mainstream. But when you've got one which’s as inexpensive because the Nanoleaf Essentials Lightstrip, it’s simple to achieve for it. And you actually don’t want an Apple HomePod mini to make use of the Lightstrip. Yes, it’s sluggish to reply when linked by way of Bluetooth, however that’s on the wi-fi protocol, not an issue with the good lights. Once extra Thread-enabled gadgets develop into obtainable, the necessity for Bluetooth connectivity is perhaps eradicated.
Until then, there are only a couple of Apple gadgets that can be utilized to take full benefit of the Essentials Lightstrip, an essential consideration if you wish to mess around with the superior options like monitor mirroring and music syncing. If you may reside with out these options, although, we couldn’t suggest the Essentials Light Strip extremely sufficient.
Should I purchase the Nanoleaf Essentials Lightstrip?
It’s simple to reply that query with a easy ‘yes’, however provided that you’re actually eager on bias lighting. The benefit of bias lighting is that it doesn’t should be for a TV or a pc monitor – you may stick the Essentials Light Strip on shelving items and even behind your mattress’s headboard for some lovely results.
It’s vibrant sufficient to be the one mild supply you may want in a small room (albeit to not learn by) and the colours are completely attractive. If you might be affected person with its response time over Bluetooth, then you definitely’ll be hard-pressed to discover a related product as inexpensive and feature-packed because the Essentials Light Strip.
