While we acquired to listen to about Marvel Future Revolution early from the workforce at developer Netmarble, we didn’t have an thought of how all these techniques and world-merging storyline’s (to not point out the 50-player battles) would match collectively.
Now that the sport has been globally launched, right here’s how a Marvel cell MMO works.
Opening up the sport throws you proper right into a struggle, with the participant controlling over half a dozen of Marvel’s biggest heroes as they battle to cease a worlds-ending occasion known as The Convergance. Instead, the alternate Earths mix into one, and gamers discover the brand new multi-themed cities and areas mish-mashing worlds collectively.
As the sport begins, gamers choose from a small roster of heroes – Captain America, Storm, Iron Man, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, Star-Lord, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man – however there’s a deep customization of expertise and costumes that makes them really feel extra personalised.
Especially costumes, which the sport’s builders appear to have an actual respect for: you’ll choose up items of character outfits from totally different eras, however you’ll be in a position to change any tools’s look totally free to maintain your look intact whereas upgrading your gear.
That’s the form of considerate, player-friendly design we have been happy to search out all through the sport’s fight, upgrades, and cosmetics – a streamlining that’s downright important given the complicated techniques that govern participant development. There are so some ways to enhance your tools, passive stat boosts, and total hero assortment that it could actually turn into dizzying.

Equally overwhelming is the sport itself, no less than at first. True to Marvel and Netmarble’s claims, the sport does really feel like an MMO, with hordes of gamers and enemies filling an enormous world. The display UI is fairly busy with a dozen buttons only for fight alongside quest reminders, menu buttons, a well being bar, minimap, and so forth.
Play for a short while, although, and also you begin to make sense of the chaos, even appreciating the units of interlocking techniques that rain rewards on gamers for working round beating up dangerous guys. The sport isn’t asking lots of its gamers (no less than at first), and it’s a enjoyable experience to take your favourite hero out for a spin to struggle traditional enemies and discover worlds that evoke a traditional Marvel tone.
What’s it wish to be a multiverse hero?
Despite taking part in on a small telephone display, Marvel Future Revolution looks like an MMO: large areas stuffed with loads of enemies, non-player characters (NPCs), and different player-controlled heroes. You’ll run round well-detailed areas, chat with quest-givers and bystanders, and choose up collectibles in treasure chests.
And like several MMO, there’s a very good quantity of repetition, from cleansing up ‘mobs’ (lots of enemy minions) to sidequests that quantity to... cleansing up extra mobs. Okay, a lot of the early duties quantity to beating up enemies, selecting up an merchandise or rescuing a civilian, and touring to a brand new space. Rinse, repeat.
Which would be extra boring in a sport that wasn’t crafted so nicely to maintain you locked in to your Marvel hero fantasy. The technical polish shouldn’t be overstated. Visually, character fashions are very detailed, the world appears nice with intricate and well-lit environments, and participant skills have vivid animations for all kinds of results from shield-throwing to webbing up foes to lightning storms. Those powers have nice sound results, too, and there’s a ton of fine voice appearing.
With a solid of characters and villains acquainted to MCU and comics followers, the sport does an admirable job of nestling gamers in a world that looks like Marvel – and whereas enemies gained’t pose a lot of a risk (it feels very troublesome to die, no less than within the early sport), you’ll nonetheless really feel like a superhero plowing via minions and villains.
Every so usually, the digicam will zoom in for an over-shoulder cinematic look whereas a participant hero performs a signature transfer. Heck, even the harm numbers have a comic book book-feel with wham-bam-POW font and animation.

Heroes are large, explosions are larger, and working round beating up enemies is participating ~ although it’s extra the world you’re doing it in than the motion you’re doing. That may be what finally makes me fall off the sport, however right here’s what I’ll get pleasure from till then.
The costumes
Yep, it’s fairly rad to have so many choices for every hero. At launch, there appear to be 18 units of costumes (with 4 components every: head, physique, arms, and legs), which quantities to 72 parts to combine and match – however most of these units have seven totally different palette swaps, bringing the whole to 456. This makes the builders’ claims of ‘400 million combinations of different costume parts’ amongst all of the beginning heroes considerably plausible.
The better part is that many of those are from comics historical past, recreating outfits from totally different eras and creator runs in addition to alternate universe variations. There’s additionally totally new costumes patterned after areas created for the sport, like Hydra Empire, resulting in Hugo Boss-ified duds for Captain America and Doctor Strange, or Asgardian-style ‘goddess of thunder’ armor from Midgardia for Storm.
The large battles
One factor I haven’t gotten to see are the large 50-player battles that the sport’s builders overvalued once I chatted with them earlier than launch. While it’s enjoyable to play via the single-player story cooked up for gamers – written by Marvel comics author Marc Sumerak, who had beforehand labored on Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 3 and Future Revolution’s cell sport predecessor, Marvel Future Fight – I need to see how 50 gamers go head-to-head in a single place.
Granted, I’m already working round Future Revolution’s areas with a dozen different gamers whereas all of us pursue numerous quests on our personal, however I’m desirous to see whether or not the large participant exercise – which is able to embrace each participant versus surroundings (PvE) and participant versus participant (PvP) fight – lives as much as the hype.
The auto-battles
There’s quite a bit to discover in an MMO the primary time round, however if you wish to begin one other character – or in this case, hero – you’ll should run via all of the introductory missions and slowly grind your method up yet again. Like many different video games, in Future Revolution, each character begins in the identical beginning space doing the identical duties, so it could actually rapidly get repetitive to should run via time and again.
Unless you’re not the one doing the taking part in: not like different video games, Future Revolution has an auto-mode that, nicely, performs the sport for you. Obviously this saps the enjoyable in the event you’re letting the sport play itself via new content material, however in the event you needed it to catch up a recent character whilst you’re busy doing one thing else, like writing an article (my Black Widow is leveling up as we communicate!), it’s good to have the choice.
There are loads of different causes for auto-play, particularly for accessibility causes ought to gamers need to expertise the sport however get annoyed or bored with smartphone controls. Or possibly you need to let Marvel take the wheel to only benefit from the story.

There’s different play-streamlining options that ease the grind, too, like tapping on a quest marker within the UI or the minimap to auto-travel to it. Or, in the event you don’t need to take care of the effort of kit and stat-boosting objects, there are buttons to auto-equip gear for essentially the most optimized construct.
The future
Marvel Future Revolution isn’t for everybody, nevertheless it’s already a formidable sport, and an excellent informal expertise for followers who need extra of the Marvel world on a platform they already personal.
Marvel's Avengers - the sport developed by Crystal Dynamics that got here out in 2020 -was a little bit of a disappointment for a lot of. We gave it a 3 star evaluation on SociallyTrend, and this may be an excellent different for individuals who have been additionally dissatisfied by that title.
There’s lots of neat touches for Marvel veterans in Future Revolution, too. Costumes apart, there’s an entire class of stat-boosting objects consisting of covers of traditional comedian points, and most of the heroes, enemies and villains are extra obscure characters who don’t seem a lot within the mainstream Marvel movies and exhibits.
There’s nonetheless some kinks to be labored out – the sport loses sound in the event you swap to a unique app – and it drains lots of battery with steady play (and generates some spectacular warmth).
But for MCU followers who're having fun with the Disney Plus exhibits and miss among the larger set items and motion of the large movies, possibly Future Revolution will tide them over till they will see movies as large as Avengers: Endgame in theaters once more.
