Choosing the right colours for your homess

The most important decision you will make while doing up your house would be regarding the colour scheme. Colours fill our lives immensely and without us even realizing what an important role they play, they find a way to make things look brighter and more beautiful. Not only regarding the aesthetic but the tones and hues that care around us also create a great impact on us mentally. Different colours can have different meanings and effects. Striking the right balance and understanding the scheme that you would want for your house and rooms would be a decision that should not be taken lightly.

Understanding the colours – Choosing the shades is a highly personal choice. The right Indian house colour combination outside the house or even inside needs to be carefully considered. The primary and secondary shades are something most of us are aware of. However, you can be creative and use the colour wheel to gain a deeper insight into the shades.

  1. Monochromatic – This scheme is the one wherein one uses the tone on tone of the same shade. Usually, white or black is also added to either lighten or darken the shades. For example, blue can be made into a pale sky blue or a dark midnight blue. The same shade is used to create all 3 effects.
  2. Analogous – This scheme makes use of the colours that are next to each other on the wheel. For example, blue can be used with green or purple. Similarly, yellow can be paired with green or range, etc. This palette is often soothing.
  3. Contrast – If you are looking for a dramatic two colour combination for bedroom walls, nothing would look better than a contrasting set of shades like green & blue, yellow & orange, red & purple, etc. Popularly known to create an energetic effect within the house, these shades are chosen quite increasingly now.
  4. Complementary – A subtle and stunning look can be achieved with two shades that complement each other. These can be contrasting or matching. For example, opposing colours like blue and orange or complementary colours like beige and brown can be chosen for a bold effect.

Things to consider – This important task of finding and painting your room with the right tones should be undertaken with utmost care and precision. Several aspects can be considered before choosing the shades and palette that you want to do up your house with. Unsure of how to start this process of selecting the hues? Here are some things you can consider:

  1. Tones – Testing the paint on the walls using swatches and paint fabrics is really important to the process. You can draw out the plans for your room and try the shades out. You can also paint a small portion of your wall with the desired shades to see the effect. Testing out the samples provides a great insight into how the shades might complement one another and even the adjoining rooms. You can look for a semblance of flow between the different rooms as well
  2. Lighting – An overall key aspect of décor within the house is the play of lights. Do not overlook the effects that lights would play on the way the paints would look. Since how lights enter the house changes throughout the day, the truest colours can only be tested if the samples are kept on the walls for a full 24 hours. Warm and bright lights can also create a different effect on how the paint looks, you might want to consider everything.
  3. Architecture and interiors – At times, when the confusion is massive, taking help from the interior décor items, fabrics, etc would also matter when you choose the paint shade for the room. You can keep the walls a neutral tone in case your linens, rugs, showpieces, etc are vibrant and full of colours.

Do not compromise while making this decision. Take your time and choose the shades for each room with careful consideration of the occupants and their choices. Check the effects of artificial and natural light on the paint samples before finalizing any shade for the entire wall or room.
