Bhool Chuk Maaf, which stars Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, has backed out of theatre release. It was scheduled for release in theatres on May 9 but will now premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 16.
The decision to halt the film, announced in an Instagram post by Maddock Films, is because of the current tensions between India and Pakistan, it adds. “With national security becoming the top priority and an enormous war chest funding terrorists from Pakistan, it’s time to support heroes in the real world,” the producers said in a statement.“And that is why we have chosen to offer you Valmiki as a direct to home release.
But what brought on this change? And what can audiences anticipate from this oddball rom- com? Let’s dive in.

Why Did Bhool Chuk Maaf Not Have A Theatrical Release?
A statement shared by the Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios read,
“Given the recent events and the national security, the enhanced security protocols around the country, we have decided to bring our family entertainer, Bhool Chuk Maaf, to your homes on May 16th only on Prime Video, across the world.
The reference to “recent events” is understood to be a reference to heightened tension between India and Pakistan, and the additional security that has been put in place as a result. Since, theatres can be crowded venues, the makers may have considered an OTT release a safer and more rational option.
It’s not the first time that outside forces have dictated a film’s strategy in release. The COVID-19 pandemic, for example, hastened the trend of digital premieres for movies like Laxmii, Coolie No. 1 and Gulabo Sitabo. Yet Bhool Chuk Maaf’s is a different case filed on geopolitical rather than health consideration.
What Is Bhool Chuk Maaf About?
Directed by Karan Sharma, Bhool Chuk Maaf is set in the bustling lanes of Varanasi and follows the story of Rajan (Rajkummar Rao), a hopeless romantic who takes up a government job just to impress his dream girl, Titli (Wamiqa Gabbi).
However, just before their wedding, Rajan finds himself stuck in a bizarre time loop—waking up on the day of his Haldi ceremony over and over again. The film blends humor, romance, and a touch of fantasy as Rajan tries to break free from this cycle while navigating love and destiny.
