AMD could launch three GPUs in April, including an Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti killer

AMD is readying three new desktop GPUs to hit cabinets in April, in response to the most recent from the rumor mill. These will theoretically be the RX 6950 XT, 6750 XT, and 6650 XT – refreshes of the 6900 XT and different respective present fashions – and so they’ll act as stopgaps earlier than the launch of subsequent-gen RDNA 3 graphics playing cards later in the yr.

This rumor from the Chiphell boards – not all the time probably the most dependable supply by any means, not often anyway, however VideoCardz, which flagged this one (through Greymon55), notes that it’s a leaker with a very good status – claims that these fashions will debut on April 20 or 21.These refreshed RX 6000 playing cards are supposedly going to be loaded up with quicker VRAM (18Gbps), which is an concept that has beforehand been floated by a properly-recognized leaker on Twitter. The Chiphell leak claims that in addition to speedier video reminiscence these refreshed GPUs can even supply ‘slightly’ improved efficiency ranges above present fashions, presumably by cranking up clock speeds a bit, which once more is a chance we’ve heard from the grapevine already. An additional declare right here is that the low-finish RX 6400, presently an OEM-solely graphics card – that means you possibly can solely purchase it in a prebuilt system (or possibly second-hand) – may get launched as a standalone graphics card. In different phrases, it could hit the cabinets so anybody should purchase the GPU, not simply these buying a brand new PC. There’s additionally a chance it could be renamed because the RX 6500, and it could run with a really barely improved spec (however primarily, it’ll supply the identical efficiency because the 6400).

Analysis: Three playing cards, somewhat than one? We’ll see…

This is an attention-grabbing leak, for certain, although we’d apply a very good serving to of condiments right here. It does, nevertheless, tally with a lot of the earlier hypothesis we’ve heard, as famous above – and it additionally ties up with a current rumor that we’d see the RX 6950 XT sooner or later in April, maybe the center of the month. What’s totally different with this leak is the declare that three refreshed graphics playing cards will come out, whereas more lately, we’d been listening to that it was probably AMD would solely look to revamp the flagship RDNA 2 GPU. Of course, that is simply evaluating one piece of hypothesis to a different, so both guess could work out, because it have been. What is obvious sufficient is that AMD is prone to really feel the necessity to have a reply to Nvidia’s incoming 3090 Ti (rumored for an finish of March launch), so on that straightforward foundation, the RX 6950 XT looks like the very best guess for an look. However, it definitely wouldn’t damage for AMD to additionally bolster decrease-tier RDNA 2 fashions – and produce out the RX 6400 more extensively – it’s only a query of how a lot sense it makes. Is it actually the time to be pushing ahead with larger strikes like this given the headwinds of element shortages, that are nonetheless anticipated to be felt till H2 2023, and the not-too-distant launch of RDNA 3 graphics playing cards that are coming later this yr? We stay skeptical, however that doesn’t imply AMD gained’t spring just a few new RX 6000 fashions on us very quickly.
